| log = At some point during that first night, Cadejoth woke up from his position on the barracks floor, and, stumbling about, managed to clamber to K'del, ending up half on and half off the cot the young man had claimed. He fell asleep again almost instantly, despite the precariousness of his position, but the jostling drew Kas from his slumber. For a moment, he wasn't sure where he was, or what - who? - was sharing his bed with him.

And then he knew, and without barely moving, he could stretch out his hand to run across the sharp ridges of green-bronze hide, feel the ichor pulsing beneath. He felt the faintest jiggle of chains, sliding effortlessly across his consciousness, the metallic tang almost a physical taste upon his tongue.

Cadejoth. He tasted the name, and then a second time: Cadejoth. His.

It must have been not too far from dawn, by then, or perhaps the first hints of light were already visible in the sky, though not from within the barracks, bathed in shadows from low-burning hearths and glows. The noises in here were different to those in the candidate barracks - some the same, of course, little noises made from sleeping teenagers and young people as they slept, but new ones. The snake of a tail. The rasp of a dragon's breath. Sighs. Snores.

Kas categorised them in his mind without thinking much of them. He shifted uncomfortably, not beause of Cadejoth, though the dragon was heavy upon his legs, but because the cot was not very long, and he had to curl up tight to fit. But mostly, he stared through the light gloom, and smiled.

Cadejoth. He'd wondered what his dragon would be like, and now he knew. Or... maybe he just had a glimpse. There was nothing foreign about Cadejoth's mind in his, and it felt already as though he knew every plane of his angular body. But he suspected there would be discoveries all the same.

He'd never doubted that Cadejoth would be there for him on those sands, and while he hadn't, exactly, recognised him from the moment of hatching, he was sure it hadn't just been guess work that made him watch so intently. No: he must have known. How could Cadejoth be anyone's but his? Certainly not Paxim's. Had the younger boy Impressed? Kas realised then, for the first time, that he'd seen nothing that happened after Cadejoth, had no idea even if there were other bronzes (none, of course, would be as perfect as his, even if there were). What about Sunniva? Hali? Jena? Tomorrow, he supposed, he'd find all of that out.

Tomorrow. He was a weyrling, now, and there would be training; he had only a vague idea, despite everything that had been talked about these past sevens, of what that really meant. And, eventually, he'd be a full rider, and people would respect him, and be impressed by him, because of that glorious dragon, because he was a Bronzerider. The idea pleased him more than he cared to admit; was that ego? He didn't aspire to be like that. He wanted... Funny. It was hard to know what he wanted, now. Wasn't Cadejoth enough?

Cadejoth. The dragon was dreaming - it was a peculiar sensation, but not unpleasant. He featured very heavily in Cadejoth's dreams, he discovered, his face imprinted deeply, with meat, and oil, and a happiness and love that made Kas' heart ache in response. To be so loved!

He snuggled back down into his pillow, breathing in the musky smell of dragon, mingled with the sweat, blood and oil that stained the robe he hadn't managed to pull off before crawling into bed. His last thought before drifting back to sleep was that he'd have to write to his family, at some point. Show them what they'd missed.

K'del and Cadejoth. It even sounded impressive.
