| log = It was Lilabet's third turnday. She was old enough to properly enjoy the party this time: to eat the cake, to unwrap the presents. Family and friends gathered around and had a lovely time; the turnday-girl eventually flopped down on the floor and went to sleep, exhausted and overwhelmed after too much sugar, too much excitement, too much everything.

Later, after she thanked people for coming and cleared everything away, Madilla asked one of her neighbours to keep an ear out for Lily while she went for a walk. It was cold outside, and the hint of more snow was in the air: it felt refreshing, though, to wander alongside the iced-over lake, and breath in the bracingly chilled air.

One turn ago, Varens had proposed to her. She remembered it as though it was yesterday: a conversation in the very same room that Lily was sleeping in, now. Quiet, in hushed tones, he'd suggested it, and she'd--

Madilla wasn't sure if she was glad she had, or sad. If she'd yes, she knew, there was a good chance she'd have another baby by now, or, at least, have one on the way. But if she'd said yes, Lily's turnday would have been celebrated at Healer Hall, and everything would be different.

She'd seen her one-time lover only in passing, the last time she'd been at the Hall. They'd not talked; he'd barely acknowledged her. Others had been quick to tell her that there had been no one since, that if she had changed her mind, there was a good chance he'd be willing--

She was never going to change her mind.

Madilla thought about Lilabet, sprawled in her bed the image of utter abandon, legs and arms akimbo. If she'd taken the normal route, the route she'd always intended, Lily would never have existed. She'd made a decision a long time ago, if you really thought about it: she wasn't going to do what she'd always expected and intended to.

So there wasn't another man in her life. Well. It hadn't stopped her last time, had it? Who would care, if her children had different fathers? If she didn't have a husband beside her? Her family had shut the door into her life a long time ago; they would never know to disapprove.

Delifa might raise an eyebrow, and talk about how, if she was patient, the right person would show up. But Madilla wasn't content to wait as long as Delifa had. Madilla wanted-- she ached with wanting. Lilabet was growing up before her eyes, and she'd always, always assumed that there'd be another one by now. If the right man wasn't going to show up, then why not have the right-now man? The one who'd give her a baby, even if he didn't stick around.

She felt herself flush in anticipation; the very idea of asking someone, just like that, made her heart thump inside her chest.

But Madilla was resolute.
