Rank certainly has its privileges, and among them are amply appointed
apartments. The short flight of stairs from the Weyrleader's Complex opens
up into the larger of two chambers, formally decorated and clearly
designed to cater as much to important guests as the occupant's personal
living. Old, but obviously expensive, llama wool rugs dyed blue-and-black
cover the stone floor, leading towards the second chamber, the stairs, and
the rush-filled dragon couch and ledge beyond it. A formal seating
arrangement - a sofa and chairs, all blue-and-black - sits around a large,
tiled fireplace, whilst along the other wall, a finely made, if now
somewhat antique, desk sits between a bookshelf and a tall cupboard to
which tack-hooks have been attached, riding gear arranged neatly inside.
Two tapestries hung from the high walls depict overdone splendour for High
Reaches Weyr, one a long view of the snow-covered bowl, and the other a
hazy impressionist piece of dragons flaming over a springtime countryside.

The inner weyr, made up of a sleeping cavern and a private bathing area,
is smaller and cosier and distinctly less ostentatious. An oversized
wooden sleigh bed fills much of the space, the mattress piled high with
overstuffed down pillows and comforter, their covers dyed in varying
shades of navy blue, light blue and bronze. There's a nightstand on either
side, both with reading lamps, and against one of the other walls, a tall,
heavy wardrobe made from a dark wood that matches the bed. The bathing
area is part of the same cavern, a folding screen shielding the toilet and
slightly raised, double-sized bathtub built into the stone, and a small
shelf holding toiletries, shaving equipment, and clean towels.

Cadejoth is cool - as cool as he ever is, granted - in answer to Rasavyth's report; he and his rider are too busy to see the other bronze pair just now, thank you very much. Indeed, it's a few days later before the summons comes, a few days in which K'del largely avoids the younger rider as much as possible. << Rasavyth. >> And: << Now. >> The visual is instructive: K'del, as seen from the ledge, sitting in front of the hearth. He's waiting.

K'del doesn't have to wait long. Rasavyth's return is simple, that his rider is coming. He's dressed in flight leathers, so he likely came from some riderly duty or another. Gloves are shucked as K'zin enters the weyr, making his approach to the fire and saluting his weyrleader with a polite, "Sir," since this is official unofficial business.

It's certainly not ''friendly'' business, not with the drawn, tight way K'del sits, nor the way his expression hardens as the other rider arrives. He gestures with his chin towards the couch, waiting until K'zin has responded - for better or for worse - before he says, "Do you think you know better than I do, bronzerider? Angling to take my knot from me?"

The drawn, tight composition of the older man's body is the first thing that pulls K'zin's brows down a touch, the confusion just starting as he sits, hands folded neatly in his lap as if he were being called to see the Harper after class. His brown brows draw down yet further when he speaks. "Nno, sir?" It's questioning not because he's unsure of ''that'', but because... what? His expression is guileless and showing just the beginning of concern. He might say more, only this probably doesn't seem the moment for that.

"And yet, you ignore my instructions ''not to talk to anyone'' and... what, deliberately bring other people on board?" K'del's voice is tight. "Because you think you know better."

"Huh?" Must be for the last, but could be mistaken for all of it, alas. K'zin is sitting up straighter, brow still creased, but his lips pressed into a line. "No, sir. I mean, yes, sir. I spoke to Alida. I didn't ''tell her'' anything about what we were doing, just that she... Shells." His hands come up to scrub his face. "I'm sorry. You said we needed to keep track of him. And what if the water got hot and he decided to get out? I don't know how to keep track of someone. Alida does. Going to her is the last thing I'd do if--" If something. He shuts up. His lips are pushed together, silence might be the better route. His differences of opinion with Alida are hardly relevant here and now.

For that last part, however truncated? K'del rolls his eyes (yes, quite as if ''he'' has absolutely no ongoing enmities with others). "Then you should have ''suggested'' to me that I consider getting Alida involved," he says, controlling his voice; low and sure. "Because I will not tolerate it. I ''will not''. This is not a free-for-all, and it is not a democracy. What if I'd had very good reason for not involving Alida? Do you believe she'd accept a 'no, I don't need you, thanks very much' and go away again?" Because K'del clearly does not.

"Do you want me to get rid of her? I can." K'zin has ways. He's frowning though. "I'm sorry. You said to involve Oliwer if I thought he was trustworthy, and I thought... just to get the job done." The bronzerider is frowning. "I'm sorry." Again. "I'm an idiot." There at least they can agree?

"No. Shells, no. That'd just make things worse." K'del's frown is aimed directly at K'zin, this time, rather than over his shoulder. "Yes, yes you are. next time... just ''ask''. Don't surprise me with assistance I haven't asked for and I don't know anything about. Just don't. Okay? Never again." His shoulders deflate, some of the anger leeching away.

K'zin may not have a tail, nor furry ears, but the way his brown eyes drop to the floor and his hands slip between his knees and his shoulders hunch is every inch the scolded canine who was just too enthusiastic. <strike>At least he didn't pee on the rug?</strike> "I won't. I'm sorry. If I'd thought..." He probably wouldn't have done it, even if he meant something more specific when he trailed off. "Oliwer was instrumental," he volunteers as if that might help his having had poor judgment in other areas.

K'del squeezes the bridge of his nose between finger and thumb, a gesture that all but ''screams'' something about 'why do I put up with this again?' It's with a sigh that he leans back in his chair, using one hand to prompt K'zin: go on, then. Details.

"The man is no fan of the Weyr, but he's not an idiot or the sort that seems likely to tell tales. His captain didn't care much for riders either, owing to our... uh, failings? with the Tillek heirs. His sentiment," K'zin adds that quickly, just in case. "His story didn't change with the retelling and he was glad to have the work. I'm hoping in time I might be able to get more details from him, or Gvanna can, but V'ros made a mess of diplomacy with him. Are you sure he belongs in Snowdrift?" He asks it and then looks immediately apologetic, "Not to question your decisions and..." Foot, mouth, mmm.

"Failings," repeats K'del, thoughtful and distracted, though surely he's been listening closely; his gaze certainly suggests as much. It's the last, though, that makes him pause, gaze narrowing all over again. "No," he says. "You would never question my decisions. Would you." There's the faintest hint of sarcasm. "Until ''Wingleader Mielline'' has a problem with Brownrider V'ros' conduct or skills, I have no problem with his placement in that wing. It's not your business; it's not mine. After all, ''you'' aren't in Snowdrift either. Is there anything else?"

K'zin's hands go up quickly, despite the hint of scarcasm. "Never. Ever. Ever. Anymore." He sounds serious for his part. There might have been times in the past, but now? Never again. He doesn't dare a smile. Not just now. "No. I'm not. It might be notable that our presence and contact with Simiron won't have gone unnoticed. Oliwer's connected him with the healers there for some relief and Gvanna's found him a job doing something or other at FishCraft." He hesitates, and then lapses into silence. This is probably where he'd mention Alida's part in things, but he doesn't. He can't be stupid ''all the time''.

K'del gets up, moving towards the hearth and facing the flames rather than K'zin; perhaps he can no longer bear the sight of him (though that's probably hyperbole). "It only matters if you've been seen if there's some big conspiracy, and ''that'' doesn't make sense since they can't have known where Iesaryth would be that day." So they should be fine. Theoretically. Sighing, he adds, "Tell Alida what she needs to know. Get her to keep an eye on him. But... subtle. Don't let him feel watched."

"Yeah," K'zin says in a way that suggests he hadn't thought of that before. "Yeah. He said they're all dead. All but him from the ship. I told him we weren't looking to pin the blame on someone, just to find out what happened." The hopeful tone in the bronzerider's voice probably means he hopes he wasn't lying. "I'll tell her." He nods and then rises. "Oliwer really was helpful," he seems to feel the need to say. "V'ros... well, I don't think Simiron would've even talked to me if Oliwer hadn't smoothed things over after." Not to ''intentionally'' get V'ros in trouble, ''of course''.

K'del's lack of comment on blame could be taken a lot of ways. His expression's obscured by his position, and when he ''does'' speak, it's obvious his thoughts are elsewhere. "Good to know. Thank you." He glances, finally, over his shoulder, expression neutral.

"May I go, sir?" K'zin requests permission to depart, though he looks a little awkward.

"Yes, go," says K'del, sounding... moody? Frustrated? ''Something''.

It may or may not help that as K'zin starts to retreat he pauses, turning back to say, "I really... I'm glad you're Weyrleader, K'del. I ''am'' your man." As he promised him before Rasavyth was more than a boyhood dream, "Just an idiot. I don't want your knot. I wish..." He, himself, was better, probably, but he leaves that unsaid and just turns to go the rest of the way.

K'del's eyes are closed, but it doesn't mean he's not listening. "We'll talk later," he says. Perhaps it means he won't be angry forever. Maybe.

Well, maybe he won't be angry forever if he never finds out K'zin told Telavi too...
