The Snowasis is rarely quiet, and even then, the high-ceilinged former
weyr is kept from echoing by the fantastical booths tucked into its
convoluted perimeter. The secluded seating spaces have been shaped from
the truncated stalagmites that escaped the smoothing of the main floor,
and are both softened and separated by colorful hangings that are thick
and opaque enough to make each corner its own private nook.

Some of the smaller stalactites still roam the ceiling, their jagged teeth
tracing a bumpy, inverted spine to the hearth. There, a thick rug with a
low klah table and comfortable armchairs and couches sit, their upholstery
and cushions changed sporadically to match the season: bright, light
colors in the summer, fresh greens and yellows in the spring, warm
autumnals in fall, and clear, rich hues for winter. Small tables litter
the rest of the cavern, enough to fit up to four people each, while stools
stand along the smooth wooden bar behind which is the passthrough window
to the kitchen. Glass-paneled cabinetry behind the bar provides a clear
view of the available liquors, the many colors reflecting the soft light
of glows tucked into strategic niches around the cavern.
| log = When Yesia pulls out the chair opposite of K'zin to settle in front of him -- after at least an hour of laughter with twenty-something greenriders and at least one female bluerider, wherein they made rounds of the bar and tables to talk to long-suffering and sometimes attractive riders -- it's not on the tail end of laughter that thus far has heralded their selection of a new target to tease with batting lashes and pretty posturing. Indeed, the greenrider seems as awkward as ever (and it's the bluerider's turn this time, she's going the other way), and she's playing with an empty glass that keeps her attention before chancing a look at K'zin to make sure he hasn't high-tailed it, and then offering, "Hi."

K'zin's eyes draw up from his drink. Certainly, he's noticed the games afoot, but he's here for the drink, not the games. When they find the redhead across from him, he manages not to get up, but his eyes do widen enough to make a girl think there's a little panic there. Still, he manfully remains, hand just a little tighter around his beer mug. "Weyrling Yesia," he greets after clearing his throat.

"''Sir''," Yesia attempts, even though they're off-duty. That's about all the sass she has, though, if it can truly be called that; she ducks her eyes back to her glass. "I just wanted to...um. Talk to you. For a minute? If that's okay?" And then, to definitely sweeten the pot, "I talked to Telavi."

"You--" K'zin starts, awkwardly, and looking ''apologetic'', perhaps even ''ashamed'' as he stares at the mug a moment. Then he draws a slow breath and brings his eyes up to Yesia's face. "You can always talk to me, Yesia." He means it.

Yesia shakes her head briskly. "I'd rather not. It's too--" Super awkward, obviously, is what she would say if she was going to finish anything. Instead, "I just wanted to apologize. For misunderstanding you. And making you uncomfortable. And kissing you. I should have thought, and I didn't."

K'zin looks a little hurt, but he happens to be thirsty just that moment, so the look vanishes behind the mug, replaced with something more neutral. "I'm sorry," is what he says in answer. "You're-- shells. Yesia, you're an attractive young woman. I just love my girlfriend. And I'm your teacher." That makes him awkward all over again. "I should've known better than-- Quinlys gave me a good lecture to help me understand what I did wrong. It was a lot of things." He's clearly letting Yesia off the hook.

"I know. And she loves you, too, I think. She was...very stern with me." Yesia bites inside her cheek like she's chosen the wrong word to describe their encounter, but she doesn't bother to correct it. "I'm smarter than that, I think. I just -- you were ''there'' and it seemed like..." She lifts her hand, with glass, and waves it like she's clearing the air. "You're very handsome, and I don't ''trust'' a lot of people here. So I just thought...." Her frown is thoughtful more than displeased. "I still shouldn't have done it. We both messed it up, then." Does that make it better?

"She does," K'zin isn't unsure of that. "I can-- imagine. I had to tell her because I had to tell Quinlys." His blush has as much to do with that as Yesia's compliment. "If--" He looks down at his glass, "If Rasavyth ever ''catches'' Aeaeth, that's--" Is there any way that doesn't end awkwardly? No. He stops closing his eyes and wincing at himself. "Listen," he leans forward and looks at her intently, "can we just-- unless that happens, can we just shelf all this-- awkward stuff?" It would be nice, wouldn't it?

Why he ratted on her doesn't seem to be part of what she's factoring in here, and if she checks out during that explanation can be forgiven. Not that it's uncommon, that distant look. She reddens when he mentions Rasavyth -- flights -- and at once starts shaking her head to stop him. "No, not again," she injects. "I don't want to think about it. Please." When he leans forward he gets her attention, if it's a wincing one that dissolves into a tentative smile. "That's good," she agrees at once. "Yeah, let's do that. But, I wanted to -- tell you. That I was sorry. I'm trying."

"Forgiven," K'zin dismisses, still leaning. "Am I?"

"Sure," Yesia agrees, leaning away now, and leaving her glass behind. "I don't think you need to be, it's pretty clear--"

K'zin holds up both hands as he sits up straight to stop her: "No, we agreed. Shelved." Stop talking, Yesia. Then he's standing up, but dipping a hand into his pocket to drop marks on the table. "Have a drink on me if you like." But not ''with'' him, he won't be staying for that.

Yesia's eyes follow him, follow his hands, but she's silenced for once, if still discontent, the way her brows furrow down. She starts, "You don't have to --" go, ostensibly, and a glance at her fellows across the room, with that bluerider returning, say that ''she'' was going to leave. But he's standing, so she folds her hands into her lap. Her voice is barely a murmur when she thanks him, her eyes on the marks. And she stays. Faranth forbid it seem like she's following him.
