H'kon had always said that 'Arekoth' had the sound of the air.

That knot he'd carried in his stomach some days now was still there when Arekoth hovered, getting a read of the air just so much as his rider read the waves beneath them. H'kon wanted to swim. ''But we will fly first.''

Ducking, diving, finding the pockets of heat and cool, soaring so high H'kon felt his head go light, dropping so quickly his stomach and all its knots were left behind them - by the end of it, when all sets of feet had touched the rocky ground of the beach, Arekoth's mouth was open, panting, and he could barely rustle his wings into place. H'kon could nearly feel the fatigue of flight in his own shoulders, alongside the ache in his limbs and centre from adapting to each of Arekoth's aerial stunts.

H'kon didn't give himself time to adjust to the feel of land. It wasn't land he wanted. He stripped as he walked, leaving a trail of clothes and gear down the empty beach. The water was cold, and all of him wanted to follow the example between his legs, hide away from it.

It made H'kon laugh, and duck his head under the waves (his sinuses throbbed threateningly), and force tightened muscles to carry him through the water. He stopped his dragon's preparations to lie down on the rock with, ''You should join me.''

But the brown came anyway.

The sun had seemed warm after that swim, and H'kon had let it dry him so much as he could. It was a quiet beach, and he was not afraid of interruption. And Arekoth's shoulder made for a decent seat.

He dressed, when he was dry enough, Arekoth forced himself into the air. H'kon began to picture the point, carefully precise. ''It's time to return.'' << Home. >>

Azaylia had told him that H'kon was a name of High Reaches. She had it only by half. Even seeing the mountains from above, even dropping down to their ledge after a lazy circle over the bowl (Arekoth had only the strength for one before he wanted rest), it was clear that the name H'kon had more the sound of Arekoth than of High Reaches. But even by proxy, the overall effect was the same.

And they would always fly before they swam.
