| log = Nervousness was not, as a general rule, an emotion that Kas allowed himself to indulge in. If it was something he could control, with some action of his, he'd do it. If it wasn't, well, what was the point in worrying about something you couldn't control?

So he wasn't nervous about the steadily approaching hatching. He comforted nervous girls half sick with anticipation, and he jokingly made plans for post-hatching drinking and dalliances and even potential jobs. He had no intention to follow through on those, however, for Kas held a deep-seated confidence that he would not be one of those left on the sands, when the last of the eggs had hatched and their contents Impressed.

A couple of months ago, it had never crossed his mind that he might end up in this situation; even as a child, he'd never dreamed of dragons and thread and glory. But now... He knew - thought he knew, maybe - without a doubt that this was his destiny, the path he'd been looking for, all along. K'del, Bronzerider. K'del, Brownrider? No: bronze. He was sure of it.

If anything, he realised, he was nervous about meeting this other part of himself. He'd known very little about what dragons were like, before coming to the weyr, and now that he'd seen their distinctness, their personalities, he couldn't quite defeat his curiousity. What would his be like? Handsome, he hoped, and proud, regal enough to impress anyone. Fast. Strong. Intelligent.

He found himself dreaming about flying with this dragon of his, exploring the world together.

He'd never dreamed like that before.

"Do you think you'll Impress?" he'd get asked, sometimes, by other candidates, by other lower caverns people, even occasionally by riders themselves. "What will it be?"

He'd just shrug. "Sure," he'd tell them. "Should do."

Some were put off by his confidence. Some laughed. A lot of them believed him, this oversized boy with his quiet confidence and lazy nonchalance, over-developed sense of pride and teenage pretensions.

Kas dreamed of dragons, and yearned for hatching day. But with others, he just laughed.

"Eggs? Hatch when they hatch. No rush."
