The vast cavern has much the same odor of redwort and numbweed as the human infirmary, though here it's seasoned with coppery ichor rather than the iron of blood. It's also laid out similarly though on a much more massive scale, its walls lined with a number of places for patients, in this case large dragon couches recessed into the floor for ease of access; nearby cots provide space for riders. Tucked into the western curve is a huge circulating pool of warm water, by which are kept vats of oil.

The healers' duty station is a counter on the north side of the room, a checkpoint before the storage rooms behind it that are now shared with the human infirmary, hosting supplies that are as neatly labeled and carefully scrubbed as the rest of the infirmary. The senior dragonhealer has an office there as well, and human-sized double doors have recently been built as a direct route to the human infirmary, while opposite a wide winding tunnel leads to the east bowl.

The dragon infirmary is rather quieter, in these thread-free turns, than it once was, but where there are dragons there are bound to be injuries, even so. This morning, it was a blue from Snowdrift who pulled some shoulder muscles and had to be sent in for treatment. Afternoon finds him resting comfortably, and the Capable Dragonhealer currently on duty - a mid-thirties brownrider named Jezeian - is keeping half an eye on him while restocking shelves and washing instruments. The blue's rider is there, too, but Sh'mal is sleeping curled up next to his lifemate, now, recovering from the stresses of the morning.

Snowdrift is Evali's wing, and the injured party Evali's wingmate; that, of course, was Yanijath's excuse. Just go along to visit. But by the time the pair left their weyr and settled down in the eastern bowl, Yanijath's persuasions had changed, to the tune of, << And now you can get that new job you keep talking about! Won't everyone be so excited? Aren't you? >> Evali certainly isn't one to refuse her dragon, and in fact Yanijath always gets her way -- so once she steps inside, she walks as confidently as she possibly can in the direction of Jezeian and her attention to supplies. And then -- stands there and fails to actually say anything. Signature Evali.

Jezeian is one of those people who, when left on her own, even when there are sleeping people nearby, talks to herself. "And we just need to refill these, for next time, and maybe get out another tub of-- Oh!" Having failed to note Evali's approach, the greenrider's presence nearby startles the brownrider, who gapes openly for several seconds before recovering her cool. "Is--" Her pause is only a brief one, probably allowing her time to confer with her brown, "Yanijath hurt, Greenrider? Is something the matter?"

Oddly enough, Jezeian's startle actually seems to calm Evali down slightly; her hands, at least, are not shaking (which one had been, but she'd had it shoved in her pocket) and she is able to speak without much of a waver in her voice, either. "I am sorry! I didn't mean to startle -- oh, no. She is quite fine. Just bossy, as per usual." There's a little hint of a smile in Evali's mostly forcibly-neutral expression, a fondness for Yanijath's ways. "Nothing is wrong, I was just -- wondering -- who I should be talking to about apprenticing." After that confession, her glance is pointedly redirected to her feet. Yanijath lingers just outside, but she's offering whispers of charm and affection at the injured blue.

It's 'bossy' that earns Jezeian's smile, formality altering irrevocably into amusement and vague fondness, which carries through her expression as Evali continues. Abandoning her stocktake, the brownrider wipes hands that probably aren't even dirty on her trousers, and says, "Well, first up, we don't call it 'apprenticing': it's much more informal than that. Trainees, that's what we call our students. Why dragonhealing? Just after the extra stipend?" The blue seems soothed by Yanijath's presence, if sleepy; the memories of hurt-hurt-hurt-ow are beginning, thankfully, to subside.

Evali looks surprised, and it's not at the fact she's gotten the terms wrong -- that's not news. What is, she blurts out without thinking about how stupid she must sound: "Extra stipend? Is there one? I -- Emme did not mention it, and if Mielline did I must have forgotten -- no, that is not it." She at least tries to smile at her own bungling; at least it makes her look more credible? Not that she'd think of it. Yanijath is pleased at her own attempts to soothe working out, and takes a couple of inches closer. Evali doesn't move to stop her -- yet. "I was a midwife, at home. On the Island. I cannot become one here; I tried, but I felt too old to start anew, and ... well, Yanijath. Others have encouraged me to try dragonhealing instead, and I am quite good with herbs and blends and have been told I have a healing touch. I would like to see how well I could do."

Hands wiped, Jezeian moves to rest them back on the table in front of her, fingernails tapping idly against the surface. "There is," she confirms. "A small increase, dependent on how many shifts you take." It's the rest of Evali's answer that she pays the most attention to, however; her blonde head tips to one side as dark green eyes survey the prospective trainee. "It can be a pretty physical occupation," she remarks. "It's pretty different to healing people. The medicines, too - but I suppose you wouldn't know much about healing here, either."

"Not really, no. I had a couple of lessons, and I spend time looking at the herbs, but -- I did not really learn anything about how it works," Evali explains, and while she is a bit waifish in build she does have height going for her at mere inches shy of six feet. "So I doubt I would really be confused or thrown off. I hope that helps." Now she seems more nervous; as if perhaps afraid she has more convincing to do. Even with Yanijath reminding her she asked Tiriana personally if she could stand and the Weyrwoman didn't refuse her, which Evali mostly shakes off anyhow. "And -- wingriding is very physical, too, more than I expected."

Jezeian's brows knit together in thought as she considers Evali's answer, but her ultimate reaction is a nod. "Well," she says. "We'll give you a try, at least. Or, rather-- I'll run you past U'sot, and if all goes well, we'll work out a schedule and get you started. There's a lot to learn, and I won't lie and tell you that you'll get plenty of practice, because realistically, we don't get ''that'' many injuries, but we'll see how you go. And that stipend won't start until you've got skills, but you'll get there."

"Oh! Thank you," says Evali, who ''very clearly'' was not expecting that as an answer. She picks up her head a little, shoulders straightening, and manages to be a bit less folded in on herself. (Yanijath is unable to hold in a croon; at least she does it softly, so as not to wake her sleepy wingmate any more.) "I am not concerned about money, truthfully; mostly I am just excited to be able to learn. I appreciate your speaking to me, ma'am." Does she know her name? Possibly; it's likely Yanijath has obtained it. Will she use it? Just as likely not.

"Jezeian," corrects the brownrider, absently, right after Evali refers to her as 'ma'am'. She's already got half an eye on her stocktake again, though not so much that she can't add, "At any rate, you're welcome. We'll see how you cope, I suppose." And, in case that wasn't obvious enough as a dismissal: "We'll be in touch."

"Jezeian. I appreciate it," Evali corrects, with a nod. It's at that point that she looks over her shoulder to Yanijath -- the green seems satisfied enough that she's backing away from the doorway, and Evali takes her steps in that direction as well. "We will get out of your way, then -- I look forward to the response," she adds, and then she's heading back to her dragon, to leave the brownrider to stocking.
