:''The Snowasis is rarely quiet, and even then, the high-ceilinged former weyr is kept from echoing by the fantastical booths tucked into its convoluted perimeter. The secluded seating spaces have been shaped from the truncated stalagmites that escaped the smoothing of the main floor, and are both softened and separated by colorful hangings that are thick and opaque enough to make each corner its own private nook.

:''Some of the smaller stalactites still roam the ceiling, their jagged teeth tracing a bumpy, inverted spine to the hearth. There, a thick rug with a low klah table and comfortable armchairs and couches sit, their upholstery and cushions changed sporadically to match the season: bright, light colors in the summer, fresh greens and yellows in the spring, warm autumnals in fall, and clear, rich hues for winter. Small tables litter the rest of the cavern, enough to fit up to four people each, while stools stand along the smooth wooden bar behind which is the passthrough window to the kitchen. Glass-paneled cabinetry behind the bar provides a clear view of the available liquors, the many colors reflecting the soft light of glows tucked into strategic niches around the cavern.

The chill from outside doesn't quite permeate the far cheerier atmosphere of the Snowasis. By the look on D'kan's face, that's something for which he is grateful. A relieved half smile appears as he starts unbuttoning his riding jacket and heads directly to the bar. The less waiting around, the better. He greets one of the bartenders with a far warmer smile, then orders a drink. When it appears, it's served neat in a tumbler, the liquid a deep amber. After thanking the 'tender, he turns to finally survey the tavern properly.

Enter one R'co, fully dressed in riding gear and still stripping off his gloves as he sashays up to the bar, bringing the chill of between with him. The blonde drops his gloves and helmet on the counter, catches the attention of a 'tender, and orders himself a drink not dissimilar to D'kan's - plus a shot of something extra on the side. With the latter down the hatch he swirls the other dark boozy concoction around in its tumbler, taking a little sip before he looks around, spotting D'kan. "Oh! It's ''you''. From the Records Room?"

D'kan likely spotted R'co when he first walked in, but he grins when the fellow brownrider acknowledges him. "It is indeed," he answers, sounding amused. "You're the map guy." He holds his own tumbler in one palm, letting the contents heat up a little bit. "Were you able to find what you were looking for?" He leans back against the bar and crosses one ankle over the other in a casually relaxed stance, not quite willing yet to sit down.

"And ''then'' some," R'co laughs, raising his glass to D'kan with a cheeky wink. Then he offers his hand to the weyrling, with a firm, strong grip that contradicts the softness of his palm and fingers, should D'kan take hold. "I don't ''think'' I introduced myself before? I'm R'co, brown Deveriteauxth's. In Snowdrift. And you, other than being a weyrling, are...?"

The handshake is returned in kind, though D'kan's hands bear quite a few callouses in contrast. "D'kan, brown Kazavoth's," he answers casually before taking a quick sip of his drink. "You transferred in not too long ago, right?" the weyrling adds a moment later.

R'co squeezes the weyrling's hand while he has it; a friendly gesture that comes with a bright smile. "You're absolutely right, I've only been back a few months now. I'm ''from'' here, of course, but Deveriteauxth found me at Ista. I couldn't ''bear'' being there any longer though, and simply ''had'' to come home. You know how it is?" He leans against the bar beside D'kan, resting one elbow against the countertop and turned to face the weyrling. "It's changed a ''lot'' here, but it's still ''home''."

At R'co's question, D'kan's eyes narrow slightly in a speculative way, but he has to shake his head slightly in answer. "I'm from High Reaches Hold, myself. First time I came to the Weyr was just earlier this Turn. Been here ever since," he says with a wider grin before he takes another sip and glances at the rest of the Snowasis patrons before turning back to R'co. "So, how different is different? The only solid facts I know about the Weyr, I learned in my candidate and Harper classes, really. Is it better? Worse? Under review?"

"''I'' left just before K'del became Weyrleader... or was it just after? It's a little fuzzy." And the fact that he's already polished off half of the hefty serving in his glass likely doesn't help R'co's memory. "Before the Vijay... ''stuff'', I think, though I'm ''quite'' sure I would have remembered someone being... ''well''. You'll know the story?" He shrugs. "So ''my'' memories are of how ''wonderful'' it was to grow up in the caverns here. And it's all ''very'' different, now that I'm grown up and not so much welcome in the nursery rooms."

"I wouldn't recommend spending much time in the nursery now," D'kan replies as he switches his feet around, still not entirely focused on finding a chair. "Had to work in there a few times as a candidate, and man... childhood is ''not'' what I remember it being." He breaks off with a crooked smile and a crooked shrug, then lifts his glass toward R'co. "Here's to new perspectives, may they never stagnate."

"''Darling'', do I ''look'' like someone who ''wants'' to spend time with anyone of such a ''dull'' age?" R'co scoffs, shaking his head at D'kan with a rather condescending wrinkling of his nose, just in case he didn't get it. He does chink his glass off of the younger brownrider's though, knocking back what's left in it and calling for another. "New perspectives in''deed''. You're ''awfully'' cute, you know?" One hand reaches up to gently pat the weyrling's cheek. "Aren't there girls simply ''dying'' to get you in bed? Surely you must be... almost at weyr stage, now? If I'm remembering the date of the hatching right?"

D'kan squints slightly after the cheek pat, but he doesn't exactly pull away. Nor does he encourage more of it, other than to laugh softly. He finally turns back toward the bar long enough to sit on one of the bar stools. He's nursing his own drink, barely halfway through it at this point. "I wouldn't know a sharding thing about girls trying to get into my bed," he answers, though sounding rather unconcerned. "I do know we should be assigned weyrs sometime soon, though." He takes another sip and glances off toward nothing in particular for a moment while swirling the rest of his glass's contents. "I'm sure the privacy will be nice, but it'll be weird, too. At least Kaz will be there."

What D'kan says has R'co's brow raising curiously, a playful, cutesy pout curving his lips. "''Reeeally''. Not a ''sharding'' clue about girls?" Perhaps he's reading it other than intended, as he leans towards the taller brownrider, looking up at him with light blue eyes. "''Well'', darling, if you ever want to share a bed with someone, ''mine'' is nearly ''always'' open. I do find my weyr gets ''awfully'' lonely when there's just me there... I've ''never'' had my own, until now."

D'kan might not have looked uncomfortable earlier, but now there's a moment when that eye squinting is joined by a slight frown as if he's trying to figure out the game. "I... don't know about girls trying to get into my bed," he clarifies carefully, if hesitatingly. "And I just meant, I've always shared living space with people. It's been really nice being in the same place as the other weyrlings and their dragons. Feels like a community." He starts to take another sip from his glass, then stops. "I guess I'm mostly worried we're all going to lose that or something. Start drifting apart and all that." Now there's that drink.

"Oh, I was the ''same'', sweet. I've ''always'' lived with someone... dorms here, dorms at the Healer Hall, candidate barracks, weyrling barracks - and as ''soon'' as I graduated, I moved ''right'' in with my-- with someone else." R'co's smile is bittersweet when he gets to the end, shrugging his shoulders. "Honestly, this is the ''first'' weyr that's been truly ''mine''. Well, ''ours'', since I share it with Dev, of course, but I do understand ''completely'' what you mean about it being... apart." His second drink is sipped from, and he shrugs his shoulders gently. "So I try and have visitors, or I pay visits. Lots of sleepovers, too. They do sort of fill ''that'' void, even if they don't always hit all the ''others''."

By the look on D'kan's face, he's definitely lost now. Does this game have a user's manual? He's the type who would probably really like user manuals. The last of his one and only drink is soon gone, the empty glass left on the counter with a small wave toward the nearest bartender to say he's all set. "Well... I guess I'll just have to see how Kazavoth and I make it work," he responds, if somewhat lamely. It's followed by a small smile as he stands from the bar stool. "And speaking of Kaz, I promised him some air time tonight before we head in. In case tagging along on sweeps all day wasn't enough." Though his smile and tone say that he does get it: it's different when it's just them. "I'll see you around, R'co. Nice meeting you a little more properly this time. Good luck with Snowdrift." Fingers work a little slowly as he buttons up his jacket and prepares to reenter the autumn chill.

"And ''charming'' to meet you properly too, D'kan." R'co layers on the warmth with a big smile, but it's not quite enough to mask that ''something'' they just spoke about has left him a little less than perky. When D'kan leaves he leans up against the bar, sipping thoughtfully on his drink... until a likely-looking someone catches his attention and he sidles over to join them. Any port in a storm!
