Summer had been warm and lovely; she'd spent as much as she could of it with Lily, enjoying the warm weather before the inevitable cooler days of autumn. Between one thing and another, she simply hadn't been thinking about things, to the point where she suddenly realised, quite out of the blue, that she had no idea when it was that she had last bled.

It had left her dizzy and uncertain, crouching on the floor in the workroom with her hands immediately dropping towards her abdomen. It was the obvious conclusion, wasn't it? It wasn't impossible.

Last time, she had been desperate for confirmation; this time, she kept the thought to herself, going through her daily business with her usual methodical thoughtfulness. Soon, she would have to talk to Delifa, or one of the other healers, and confirm her suspicions, but she put it off: there would be questions, then, and concerns, and that not-quite-hidden disappointment in Delifa, who didn't quite understand.

When the time came, she avoided the questions. The father? "Not in the picture." Was she sure? "Yes." Was she happy? "Oh yes. Yes, yes, yes. A thousand times yes."

So often in the past, she'd felt the faint, dismal burn of envy watching pregnant women with their partners; so often she'd dreamed of having something similar. Now, though, she felt only peace: it was what it was. She was what she was. This baby was hers, and he or she would be wanted.

Other things, she tried not to think about.

Instead, she told Lily, who was unsurprisingly delighted. She began working on a new quilt: something for the new baby to sleep under, something that belonged to him or her alone. She requisitioned a new bed from the stores, one with a proper, trundle-bed underneath for Lilabet to sleep on, now that she was getting too big for her cot. She cleaned. She dreamed.

It was slow, and it was surprisingly easy. Her body, still soft and round from that first pregnancy, adjusted easily, and showed little. Madilla ran her hands over the curve of her belly, feeling for the life inside. It was there - she knew it was there. But for now, it remained an almost-secret.

''Not because it's a bad thing'' she told herself, she told her colleagues, she told her closest friends. ''But it's my thing.''
