For their third wedding anniversary, he bought her an expensive necklace, handcrafted by a Master Smith. The sparkling jewels glittered and reflected in her gaze as she stared into them, letting her fingers move along the cold, shining metal backing. There was a tightness in her gaze, a furrow in her brow like she ''knew'' it was as much a gift as it was apology, as it was payment.

But that night, she let him back into her bed, anyway.

Sealene was nearly nine months old, and they would have to start trying for another child soon. Another heir.

It was her duty.

Their duty.

Besides, she couldn't be mad at him for something he'd done before he met her. She ''was'', but she ''shouldn't'' be.

The fact that Vinien had started talking about what "Dee did" and "Dee said" was a constant reminder that she couldn't blame the boy for. It was obvious he wanted a brother. She wanted to give him one. And she wanted to give Devaki another heir, so that ''that'' woman's child would never be considered for Holding ''her'' home, even should something happen to Vinien.

She was also, she admitted, a little frightened. Ienavi, Nabol's Lady, had gone missing. How could a Lady go missing? Who would ''dare''? She'd known Ienavi from when she'd been fostered at High Reaches, and had looked up to the older girl.

It made her feel safe to have Devaki by her side, in her, ''their'' bed again. Whatever else, she knew he loved her, even if, she admitted privately, not as much as she loved him.

In the morning, she'd write to Lord Ustelan and offer High Reaches' support. It was only fitting.

Surely Devaki wouldn't mind.
