It was kind of awful, going back to High Reaches. Back to an empty bed, and a Weyr that was no longer his - a Weyr that K'del was increasingly aware he wished ''were'' his, even as much as he knew it was a relief, too. While on the island, they'd been able to pretend, just for a while. In a different lifetime…

He knew he'd never be happy living there all the time. He knew the cothold life, the vinehold life, would drive him mad. But for snatches of time, it was easy to lose himself in the satisfaction of working with the earth, and of coming home to a meal cooked for him by a woman he cared about. A woman carrying his child.

He couldn't help but grin as he thought about that. A ''baby''. They were having a ''baby''. It had been so long since the boys were babies, and he'd never known Yvalia or Erika as babies. This time… this time he'd be there, properly, as much as he could be, for his child. This time he was going to do it right - do it properly.

A baby!

There was a basket waiting for him, in his weyr - a note, accompanied by a bottle of very fine whiskey that he almost immediately found himself wanting to throw across the room, just to watch it smash into the wall. He restrained himself.

Tayte was gone. ''Yvalia'' was gone. Taken to meet her family? That couldn't be…

K'del's second instinct was to rush back to Cadejoth and go out and find the missing pair, the Vintner and her daughter (''his'' daughter), and drag them home again. Tayte could claim all she wanted that she was coming back, but K'del… he doubted. ''She's running away from me'', he told himself, throwing himself onto the couch and covering his face with his hands. ''She's taking my daughter away from me.''

His euphoric joy was gone.

He spent hours, that night, staring at the drawing left with the note. The camping trip they'd taken for his turnday - his boys, and his Vali.

It hurt. Being with Ali felt so right, so ''natural'', and yet he'd hurt Tayte so badly for it. And now she was gone.

By afternoon of the next day, he was hunting around Bitra in search of Tayte's fosterparents, hoping beyond hope that it would be easy to track down the Vintner and bring her home. He didn't get as far as he would have liked: Cadejoth's sudden panic put an end to their searching.

K'del never did find out how his dragon had heard the news. He knew only that Ali, his Ali, was in danger… and his unborn child with her.

They went home.

It was the first time he'd really regretted, intensely, not being a Fort rider. He could not go to Fort, or to Boll, and take part in any rescue operation, any bartering. This was their tragedy, their trauma, and as much as it impacted him, he could not intrude.

All he could do was wait, and hope. ''Surely'' these bastards would not hurt a Weyrwoman. ''Surely'' they wouldn't dream of taking things too far.

But they'd done this much; how could be bear it? How could he trust it?

There was nothing they could do for Ali and Isyath but sit vigil, and that was worse than nothing at all. The search for Tayte continued. If not one of the women in his life, then the other.

The news hit K'del like a ton of bricks. He knew his wingmates had thought him strange, even half-demented, since his return from vacation. This was not the relaxed, rejuvenated K'del they'd been anticipating. This was a distracted and distractible K'del, a man who seemed barely with it, more likely to cause a problem than lead a solution.

He saved his tears of relief until they were alone, just the two of them. Tayte was still out there, somewhere in the great wide world, keeping Yvalia from him. But Ali was safe.

Even so, he would have felt better if he'd been able to be at her side. Better if, in all of this, he could have done something to help.

But High Reaches could not intrude on Fort's grief.

There was more waiting to do.

And more searching.

Until he had leave to go to Ali, there was nothing else he ''could'' do.
