The rest of the bowl may be barren, grass barely surviving at best, but
here by the lake, it's brilliantly green in the warmer months: thickening
and thriving in the silty, boulder-dotted soil just before it transitions
to soft sand and thence to the cool, clear water itself.

A large freshwater lake fed by a low waterfall, it not only provides
warm-weather bathing space for humans and dragons, but has one end fenced
off as a watering hole for the livestock in the feeding grounds. The water
there is often muddier than the rest of the clear lake, whose shallows
drop off abruptly several yards out into deep water, and whose edge
undulates against the coarse-hewn bowl wall: here close enough to just be
bramble-covered rocks, there far enough away that a narrow land bridge
divides the main lake from a smallish pond. Between are several rocky
outcroppings that form excellent makeshift diving points, though only one
-- across the bridge -- has a set of narrow, slippery, quite possibly
tempting stairs.

The snowfall is light and intermittent throughout the day until it tapers
off completely into a frigid night. The ground is damp, though very little
sticks.

Despite the frigidness of the air, it's to the lake shore that Lycinea treks through the paths that wind through the snow piled in the bowl. ''Probably'', in light of the temperature, this won't be a long visit there, but there's open sky, and a tranquility to the still mostly frozen lake that is only interrupted by the stomp-crunch of Lya breaking off bits of ice pocketed into shallow divots in the shoreline to pluck up with her mittens and chuck across the lake to shatter and skitter across the remaining ice.

Not only Lycinea has the idea of trekking towards the lake. Rategar makes it there shortly behind her, his hands in his pockets as he looks out over the lake first before spotting her. Watching her for a while as she appears occupied, he looks back towards the lake as he says, "Throwing rocks would be better."

"Rocks don't shatter," Lycinea disagrees. Perhaps after all that care in the cavern where no one makes a jerky move, she just needs to ''break things''. "Why did she have to do that?" The blonde demands of the man, as if he might know. "Remind us about all the ''horrible things'' that happened before Niahvth's last clutch hatched. What was the point of it? Was there one? Did she even ''think''?" This is what a pissed blonde looks like. She hurls another chunk of ice forcefully before her boot comes down hard into a puddle (rather than the ice she aimed for) and it splashes over her boot enough to wet the sock beneath and she swears passionately but probably not ''really'' because her sock is wet.

"I don't think anyone's thinking right now," is Rat's opinion, the man looking over the shore with marked seriousness. "She seemed upset before we got there, so, we didn't make things any better. You're going to make yourself sick." He nods towards her now, watching Lycinea with his heavy gaze.

Lycinea whirls to face the older man, advancing on him, arms thrown up as she demands, "So what if I am? Who would care?" Her look is fierce as she continues. "Worst that would happen would be one fewer candidates on the sands if the eggs chose tonight to crack. Boo hoo."

"I wasn't talking about you in particular," Rat lets her know, arms folding across his chest. "But you're upset too." Well, he's not the sharpest. Stepping towards her, "She was upset and she said things she'll probably regret later," he says, the humor gone in him. "I'm sure this clutch'll be just fine. Nerves, maybe. I don't know." If it's comforting. The former stablehand seems at a loss with a distraught girl before him.

Something about the fact that she has to correct, "No, you ninny, I mean, 'so what if I am making myself sick'," abruptly settles Lycinea's mood, going from ramping up for ''something'' to still vexed but not about to ''cry'' or anything. Her arms come up to cross over her chest, protectively but not ''defensively''. "It's not like people don't ''remember'' that Azaylia died in that fire, or that people were trapped for ''a fortnight'' in a cave in and thought they were going to die the whole time. People ''know'' about the horrible things that happened then. Why bring it into ''this''? Into ''this hatching''. Nothing ''horrible'' has happened with ''this'' clutch." Unless one counts the whole bloody contributions by Lythronath. "The Weyrleader getting stabbed was ''Niahvth's clutch''. Nothing has happened for ''this'' clutch. It's-- ''pure''." That sounds silly and helpless and she must realize that for it makes her glare furiously at the ground.

Rat look dubious. He's watching Lycinea closely now, silent. It's clear that he doesn't know what she's talking about, but he does say, "I've heard a little about that....the last Weyrwoman? Yeah. The eggs are ''fine'', Lycinea. Nothing's wrong with them. We just touched them, didn't we? Seemed fine to ''me''. She was just--" Well, he doesn't know, but he pauses anyway from saying anymore.

"''Lya''," is a forceful correction to the young man. "She was just ''Farideh''," is said with the sort of exasperation that only one friend can have for another. "I ''hoped'' she'd grown up some." The purse of her lips says 'I guess not'. "The last Weyrwoman," is confirmed. "People were concerned because the one before that ''might'' have died in a storm or ''might'' have been murdered in a storm, and though most finally concluded it was just dying and not with intent, there was worry that the Weyrwoman getting caught in that tent and ''burning to death'' at the Igen bazaar thing Farideh and Z'kiel and some other Igenites had hands in, while Irianke was so newly arrived, might have been intentional, too." It's Lya's turn to look dubious as she looks at the young man, "Are you sure you know what sort of place it is you're offering to find your lifemate at? I ''hear'' it's not so easy to leave once you've got one, unless you've a good reason, or done something horrible."

"Lya," Rat corrects, a tad humorous before it drops off in the face of all the rest she says. Really, he's trying to keep up. "I've heard the rumors of Weyrwomen dying left and right," he states. "This Weyr seems to have its hands in bad luck. Weyrleaders getting stabbed at Holds....No wonder the women here are crazy." That ''must'' be it. To her question, there's a shrug from him as he turns towards the lake and answers, "I tend to pop up where bad luck lives. There's probably no better place than here for me right now. If I don't Impress, I'll eventually move on to the next cursed place. Maybe it's just what I do. Why? Why are ''you'' here, then, if this place is so bad?" he asks her now.

"You couldn't have picked a lovelier place," Lya replies with a dark laugh, expression grim as soon as it's over. "This place tried to kill me once and I loved it anyway. I left and I never stopped. My name is etched in the rock up there. This is where I belong," that's said with an odd sort of resolve. She looks over at Rategar a moment before turning on a heel and starting back toward the bowl.

"Then it looks like we're both doomed in this place," Rat says to that, letting in a little bit of humor with that as Lycinea starts to head back. He remains at the lake a bit longer himself, only giving her in her wake, "Take it easy. Lya."
