| log = Azaylia had been feeling sick the entire day. It was obvious in her pale face, in the way she was dragging her feet about the stables. The glossy look in her eyes. Those who would notice brushed it off as simple nerves. She was so fragile, surely all the tension of the Weyr was finally upsetting the holdbred girl. Such a sweet thing. A good, hard worker. Honest. Trustworthy.

Those were the very reasons the letter had made it to her hands instead of Journeyman Mack's. Of course Azaylia could be trusted to deliver such an important document from the Crafthall.

Of course.

''Journeyman,''

''It is in the Beastcrafthall's best interest to remain neutral on High Reaches Weyr and the proceedings thereof. On a personal note, I happen to agree with your assessment of recent developments; such as the highly volatile state of the Weyr's Leaders and the environment it is creating for the minds of our pupils.''

Her hands tightened, crinkling what had to be expensive parchment as she struggled to read in the dim light. The rustling sounded explosive to her ears, so used to the dead silence of late night. Azaylia listened hard, breath held. Nothing. She read on.

''While these happenings are worrisome in their own right, I am familiar with your Apprentice and understand your concerns. If I recall her correctly, I cannot imagine how she has managed to put on a brave face for as long as she has. For the reasons you stated in your previous letter, your request to return to the hall has been granted.''

Azaylia had to read that last line several times before she understood it fully. There were no tears, betrayal's sting bearable the second time around.

''You are welcome to begin traveling as soon as this letter finds you, or wait until the official announcement reaches the Weyr. It seems you are not the first Journeyman to voice his concerns, and I am not the first to bring them to the Crafthall's attention. I expect other Halls will be taking similar actions, though I cannot speak for them.''

Time. She had time. Who knew how long it would take for them to send out an official letter?

Alone in the main Craft Complex, Azaylia's fingers worked at the paper between them. The tearing was slow, drawn out in an attempt to be as quiet as possible. Heart pounding, her sweating hands left damp prints over the torn chunks of parchment. She leaned forward, watching one abstract leaf fall into the pitiful flame within the hearth.

''Light.'' She willed the smoldering ashes. Just as she was ready to reach in and rescue the incriminating evidence, the edges began to curl in on those dreadful words. Then, there was nothing left but black flakes.

Her sordid task gained desperate speed, making sure that every bit she fed into the weak fire was completely obliterated. Azaylia didn't bother to read the rest. She had her answers. Time was precious, and the consequences of being caught far too severe.

The rest of the neglected ink was slow to burn:

''Should she consider this recall as a sign of failure, please reassure Apprentice Azaylia. As I understand it she has been due to walk the tables for some time. I make no promises, of course, and a full evaluation will be required upon your...''

She was thorough in the destruction of the letter, dark eyes ever watchful without really seeing the words for what they were. Azaylia knew better than that, now. There was nothing she could do but be loyal and honest... and stay away from the negativity.

So that was what she was going to do.
