| log = Afterwards, he'd been in a state of shock and confusion. It had almost helped, somehow, that Cadejoth was injured: getting him the help he needed had given K'del something to focus on, something concrete.

Something that wasn't tearing him apart inside.

''You'll be ok,'' he'd reassured the bronze, breathing in the musky smell of dragonhide. ''You'll be ok.''

Later, it hadn't been so easy to believe. It felt like everything was falling to pieces - like this was the end of the Weyr he knew and loved, like he might as well request a transfer now because there was just ''no way'' this was going to work.

For a few minutes, he contemplated the idea. He could... go to Benden, and try and get involved in his sister's life again. He could go to Ista, or Southern. Somewhere the weather would be nicer.

He could...

He couldn't.

High Reaches was home. He couldn't abandon her to the ravages of ''Taikrin''. He'd picked up enough to know about Iesaryth and Arekoth; with four of them, he reasoned, staring out over the foggy night sky, things would be a mess. People wouldn't stand for it.

There was room for something else.

"I won't let them destroy my Weyr," he said, out loud, though in a whispered tone. "I won't."

Cadejoth's wings rustled beside him, the pain lost beneath the numbweed. K'del draped his hand over the bronze's foot, and sighed in a deep, cold breath of air. "Brownriders shouldn't be Weyrleaders. They can't be. And... and it's supposed to be that the first queen who rises is the senior. But if two of them rose, then... neither rose first, and that means there is no senior. Those were ''junior'' flights."

The idea had sudden merit. It filled K'del with a surge of hope. All he had to do...

Despite his bravado, he cried again, that night. He buried his face in his pillow and sobbed for everything that had gone wrong, this turn and more. Things were supposed to have gotten simpler, easier, better, after Tiriana. Instead, it felt like they had gotten worse.

Oh Iolene.

He missed her, more than ever, that night.
