She fed them.

Azaylia regained some comfort, nestled against her queen's chest before they grew restless once more.

She got up to give them blankets and cushions.

It was only when the people in her weyr were settled and asleep did she bring a bottle with her on the return to Hraedhyth's wallow. Slippered feet kicked bones and skull fragments out of the way, crawling to settle between her dragon's paws.

When there was nothing left to drink, she still didn't feel any better. Azaylia reclined, doing her best to balance the empty bottle on the tip of her index finger. It fell often, got her digit slippery with beer, and landed in her lap harmlessly. It was something to do, beyond wallowing in her misery.

No, not ''her'' misery.

''It's alright, Hraedhyth. It's... hard right now. For everyone. I'm sure-''

Azaylia clenched her eyes at the wave of sadness, feeling it flood her body and settle heavily in her heart.

To a casual observer, Hraedhyth remained unchanged. Her head was lifted high, staring out at the snow that fell on her ledge. Drums were not particularly loud, steady in a monotonous manner, and still constant in the minds of High Reaches' dragons. It gave the impression that everything was fine. ''She'' was fine. In a way, she was. << Yes. >> Stern, strong. << It is. >>

The junior gripped the bottle to her chest, eyes still screwed shut at the hurt pulsating through her. It was best to hold her breath, wait for it to dwindle before she could slump against her dragon's leg.

<< A queen must be strong. A queen can show no weakness in the face of an enemy. They need u- >> Azaylia was caught off guard, only exhaling as the gold righted herself. << They need me. >>

''I know.''

Hraedhyth quieted then, << And, >> the crackle of her flames carried through their more intimate bond. << I need you. >>

Azaylia did her best to smile through the tears that were not entirely her own. She nestled into her dragon's wide chest, tucked up against that tawny hide, prepared to help her dragon through the night. It would better, soon. It always was.

After all; all they had, all they needed, was each other.
