|log=Lilabet, of course, had been planned. But it had only taken once (how she'd been that lucky, Madilla had no idea; it was almost unheard of, it seemed, except among teenage girls who really shouldn't be having sex in the first place and if it were Lilabet she'd... well.), and so it barely counted. (Dilan, of course, had ''also'' only taken the once... but she'd not been planning on him. Why was it the two men she'd slept with only once had both gotten her pregnant, but the ones she'd actually had relationships with...? Better, perhaps, not to think about it.)

She remembered the waiting, with Lilabet, and how hard it had been.

This time, it was worse.

It had taken Madilla longer than most to truly understand the sexual side of herself, to really ''get'' why it was that sex mattered so much. Longer than most-- but she'd made it. For two busy people with children and dragons and (well, no longer patients, but ''work'', anyway) everything, they did pretty well.

But now... now it was different. A race. A challenge. A commitment.

A duty.

Work.

Not... not in a ''bad'' way. Only... she felt like they were always rushing home for it, and sometimes it was more mechanical than...

And, of course, there was the monthly disappointment. The tell-tale dull ache in her gut; the smear of blood. Signs of visible failure. Another child that never was.

Madilla ''knew'' their chances were low. She knew, of course she knew, that if they'd not managed in all these turns, despite her (sometimes haphazard) efforts, there was a good chance it never would. Perhaps something in her had changed, since Dilan. Perhaps H'kon...

In the absence of an authoritative answer, there was nothing doing but to keep hoping.

So she hoped.

How many times had she told hopeful women to give it more time? They'd only been ''trying'' for a few months-- it was too soon to lose hope. Much too soon.

Summer, inexorably, was on its way out. She'd sent Treinan off to work with some healers at Ierne, and indicated to her superiors that she'd be working from High Reaches. ''Treinan'' would prefer to be doing paperwork, and ''Madilla'' would prefer to be working with people, but it was good experience for them both; she sat on Arekoth's ledge, now, cross-legged with a quilt beneath her, and tried to be diligent.

Dilan and Raija were at the lake; she couldn't really see that far, but she could see the distant haze of the water, and she could ''imagine'' their joy. There wouldn't be too many days left where it would be warm enough... in a few months, it would be all snow again, all the time.

All of her babies had been born in the winter. Month two, month three. Within a few sevens of each other, all of them.

One of her hands dropped to her curved-- but not curved in the ''right way''-- belly. There would be no late-winter baby this turn.

H'kon and Arekoth were due home soon.

Perhaps this time...
