|log=There was always a formal dinner at the end of the examination period, at Healer Hall. Madilla had often attended, back before Delifa-- before. Back when she was just a journeyman, and assisted with exams. She'd always felt both a thrill and a sense of nostalgia as she watched younger healers walk the tables; she remembered her own Walk from Junior Apprentice to Apprentice, and the more bittersweet Walk to senior, after Satiet died.

This turn, there was a formal invitation for her; she knew what it meant.

The pressure had been quiet but firm for a while, now. Encouragements. Enticements. Think of all the apprentices she could look after, if she accepted a posting back to the Hall! Think of all the good she could do!

She'd told them, the last time she'd met with any of her Masters. She'd tell them again, too. ''I don't want to be a Master, and I don't want a posting back to the Hall. I'm weyrmated. My children are here. My whole life is here.''

They'd pointed out that Lilabet was at Harper Hall, and how ''close'' she'd be. That Dilan was at High Reaches Hold ("Only until the end of the turn," she'd reminded them), that H'kon had dragon and could travel.

And what about Raija? She couldn't do that to Raija.

She felt a certain sense of satisfaction, refusing their invitation. It felt rebellious, and when was the last time she'd been even remotely rebellious?

She knew, too, that if they really decided to force the issue, they could. She served High Reaches at their will; if Craftmaster Tevara made up her mind, that would be that. She could accept what they offered, or...

Or what? She could leave?

Sometimes, it was enough to keep her up at night.

She'd have to leave, if it came to that. There was no way... it just wouldn't ''work''.

''I never wanted to be Master,'' she reminded herself. ''Delifa never was. It's not what I want.''

They didn't chase her, after that formal dinner. No knot appeared in her office; no summons arrived.

But she knew it was only a temporary reprieve: sooner or later, they'd make their demands.

She ought to be flattered that she, the mostly-illiterate girl from the middle of nowhere, the one everyone had assumed would flunk out and leave, was now being pursued for Mastery.

She wasn't.

She was terrified.
