| log = Rilka teetered on the edge of reality. It was a struggle to keep hold of everything: even she knew that if she didn't pull herself together, if she couldn't-- the dragons scared her, though. They scared her to places she hadn't known existed; they made her twitch and shudder.

They were going to take them away from their island.

She wasn't sure how she'd known that so desperately, the moment she'd seen them, but something inside her had clicked: that was it. She knew, without question or pause, that it would be the end of things; the end of the life she loved so well.

She hid from them, deep in the caves, and sang herself to sleep far from earshot and memory. Perhaps she'd stay there; perhaps she'd never come out, and then she'd be safe.

Not even she could live without sunlight and food, however. She kept to herself, as she exited the caves, seeking out the lonely places where she might prolong her solitude. She grew wild-- wilder-- over the days that followed; she did not show up for meetings, nor share in the conversations. Her hair grew more matted, her face more dirty.

She could smell the storm coming, though. She'd listened to Shimana; she'd learned the things the older woman had taught. Far in the distance, something was brewing, and it was no storm like the last one, nor any in her memory. She felt it at the back of her neck, raising hairs; it chilled her the way wind and water could not.

How she knew to come when she did is a matter up for debate - were anyone to take the time. She simply showed up in the midst of the evacuation, wearing nothing but the filthy dress she'd been wearing that day on the beach, her hair matted beyond recognition. White faced, she looked likely to faint as she mounted her assigned dragon, but she kept her peace. Others screamed, as they rose into the air - still more screamed as they went Between.

Rilka stared blankly ahead, more ghost than girl.
