She could dwell on the ironies of the ''romantic'' seclusion the two had coupled in, with the lush foliage around them, the blooming flowers, the humid heat, and how R'oan had failed to notice it. Strictly business.

Or she could think of Igen, only a few dragon lengths away now.

Her body and soul ached for home. It longed for ''home''. She missed friends and the family she had grown too accustomed to and had taken for granted. When Nimae had sat her down to speak of this endeavor, she was told, ''ordered'', to cut ties with her new home for the duration. It'd be temporary, but her Weyrwoman had not wanted any breath of her goldrider's divided loyalties exhaled. Gossip would have enough material to work with.

It was always hard to distinguish between where ''she'' started and where her dragon ended after a flight. It would be such until the clutching, with her head clouded over with all the maternal instincts and emotions Niahvth drew out of her, unintentionally, during this time. But she knew, this longing was purely her own. Niahvth had taken to the Reachian Weyr and the dragons there and made them her own. The temporary relief in dancing, forgetting, and being ''with'' someone was welcome at the end of her very long days.

She could think on the High Reaches weyrlingmaster team and just how very young they were, meant with only the best of patronizing intentions. The offense they had taken was understandable and yet... So very young. She had gone over the scene with Niahvth over and over again later and the two had concluded that there was no case where a good outcome should have been expected.

Her thoughts briefly flittered from this and that but ultimately landed on the Fortian brownrider.

''Your whole job is to sell an ideal.''

Why it troubled her, she could guess, but it wasn't a thought she necessarily wanted to dwell on.

''You are just a facade. A pretty front to execute someone else's will,'' said the nagging voice in her head.

Would. No, could. Could it be any different if she were in charge?

She had watched Azaylia over the last few months, where the woman excelled and where the lack of a strong Weyrwoman presence in her life ''seemed'' quite obvious to a woman trained by one of the best, if most difficult, taskmasters. She could admit to herself that her standards might be unrealistically high, however.

"Yes," she said aloud, scaring an avian that had landed on a branch near by with the sudden vocal interruption. "It would be different. And we don't sell an ideal. We do our duty."

Irianke decided if she ever had the misfortune of running into R'oan again, they would have to dispense with any talk and just do what they both seemed to do best: shut up and open their legs. That, or pretend to be what he thought she was. She was good at pretend.

She didn't like feeling defensive of the life she had built. Or feeling angry that she was defensive.

''That Nimae had built.''

Her sub-conscious deserved to be told, "Shut up." She picked the last twigs off her outfit and patted her hair to make sure it wasn't too mussed before walking back through the jungle to the Gather. A gleaming silver pin, tucked under a large leaf, went unnoticed.
