| log =Madilla spread the quilt over her cot, and examined it critically. It was big: it flowed all the way to the floor on three sides of the little cot, but that was as she'd planned it. She examined the lines of stitches, all those pinwheels she'd sewn together painstakingly, then the quilting, when she'd sewn together the layers - the top, the batting, the backing. That had taken the longest: hour upon hour of painstaking work.

You couldn't see them anymore, but she'd stitched words in, between the layers, deep into the batting that made up the quilt's bulk. Peace, beneath one set of pinwheels. Family, beneath another. Hope. Friendship. Tolerance. Good Dreams. Belonging. Lots of words, hidden in there - lots of hopes.

The quilt was finished. After four months of work, the time spared from her evenings and restdays, every spare moment, it was finished.

It was blue, for the most part, the pinwheels made from scraps of fabric taken from stores in every shade of blue imaginable, from the palest sky blue to the darkest navy. Interspersed, every so often, were patches in other colours: a red one here, a yellow one, a bronze one.

She ran her hand over it, feeling the different fabrics beneath her fingers. Something silky, something rougher, the smoothness of fine cotton next to heavier denim that probably once was part of someone's work pants.

It was beautiful. And just in time. She'd missed the weyrlings getting their weyrs, of course, but W'chek's turnday was coming up, and that made it perfect timing, really. A Turnday present. Her gift to him, like the necklace had been from him to her. She found her hand wandering to it, without even intending to, feeling the solid presence of it beneath her shirt. Promised. Officially.

The quilt, and having it to give, made her enormously happy. She was proud of herself, for this present: something she'd made entirely on her own! Something she'd made just for him.

How exciting!
