Kiatan was well trained; the door closed softly behind him as Devaki made his way to the window. As much as the Lord Holder of High Reaches disliked the official office in which he was expected to conduct his business with the more prominent dignitaries, the one benefit it had was the position which allowed him to oversee the courtyard.

The brown's rider straightened as she saw two people come out. One was Kiatan, notable for his even stride, expertly keeping pace with the older woman at his side. Lady Edeline walked with her head high, composed. Devaki watched her climb atop the dragon, somehow making it look elegant.

For a moment he imagined the rider winking in his direction.

But then again, maybe he didn't imagine it.

He watched until the dragon disappeared between, gaze lingering on the space.

In many ways, he felt conflicted. He admired Edeline -- privately admitted that in some ways he looked up to her. She was strong willed, knew what she wanted, and knew her job -- sentiments he himself felt he expressed. In another life, they'd have been a good match.

The door opened behind him, and Devaki realized he'd been staring at the empty sky. He kept his posture relaxed as he felt a hand press against his shoulder.

"Was that Lady Edeline I saw with Kiatan?" Issedi asked. "You should've invited her to dinner."

"It wasn't an... it's best that it's not known she was here," Devaki said, turning. Issedi was over five months pregnant, and her belly was starting to swell to something noticeable; the sight of it made him smile. A second boy, he hoped, though, given today's discussion, perhaps another daughter wouldn't be such a bad thing, either.

"Nabol?" Issedi guessed, astutely.

"Nabol," Devaki confirmed.

"You never told me who you supported."

"It seemed prudent to remain neutral. Rone was too much of a wild card, and Ienavi..." he hesitated.

"She's the logical choice," Issedi said.

"Is she though? Ustelan has many heirs, many of whom ''stayed'' at the Hold, tried to help their people."

"Ienavi didn't have a choice! She had to protect her child." Issedi laid a hand over her stomach, something sharp creeping into her tone.

Devaki traced his fingers against Issedi's face, softening his voice, "You're right of course, my dear. But let's not linger on such an awful topic. It'll be discussed enough when it comes to Conclave. Come; let's see how the children are getting along."

He wasn't sure he believed all of what Edeline had told him about the things Rone had written her about.

What he did believe was the marriage alliance between Ienavi and Aughan, and that wasn't to be tolerated.

In the end, his wife's wishes aside, Devaki was practical about things. He and Tevrane met at a small cothold outside Nabol. He found her mature, forthright, and determined, all things he admired.

That she declared her intention to name her grandson her heir helped. That she agreed that the boy would be fostered to High Reaches Hold for two Turns on his fifteenth Turn cemented things. By then, Sealene would've grown into her own, and perhaps other daughters would attract his eye, too.

It was a logical step to secure his future.

Their future.
