|log=She'd been homesick at first, of course. It was the first time she'd been away from home; the first time she'd been away from her family for any length of time. She was one of the youngest in the apprentice dorms, and even after so many months of dreaming about what it would be like... it wasn't what she'd imagined. She hadn't immediately felt like part of the group, a member of a coterie of girls who would giggle all night and maybe have midnight feasts and braid each others' hair.

Instead, she'd felt incredibly alone.

That had passed, in time. Or... well, it had ''lessened''. She'd started to make friends, and her classes had been so interesting and challenging it had been easy to lose herself in them. In time, she'd started to remember exactly why she'd wanted to be here, and why here was the best place for her to be.

But now it was month three. First, there was Raija's turnday.

Raija, whom she knew, from her mother's letters, was still struggling with feeling abandoned by her siblings.

She missed Raija. More than she'd expected she would, if she were being honest.

Raija's turnday was hard.

Her own fell only a sevenday later; her twelfth.

Her new friends made a fuss of her, and there was mail from home, and it was... nice. But she'd told Mama and H'kon not to visit, because she had late classes, and there just wasn't time, and even though she knew they'd come on her next restday instead, it was...

It wasn't the same. She remembered her tenth turnday, when they'd thrown that proper party for her, and it had been amazing. She remembered last turn, which had been quieter, but still ''perfect''.

Now, trying not to mope, she realised exactly what her mother had been trying to tell her: being an adult meant things had to be different. Not even deliberately so, just... automatically. Her turnday would mean different things. Eventually, it might not matter at all.

But today, the day she turned twelve, she didn't feel very adult: she felt like a little girl, far from home.

In another three sevens, it would be Dilan's turnday, and she had special permission from her teachers to go to High Reaches Hold for the day, and be with her family. In a way, she was glad they wouldn't be at the Weyr - that felt raw; too soon - but she worried, too, about being at a High Reaches Hold where Dilan actually ''lived''.

Nothing, she knew, was ever going to be the same.

But she was twelve, now.

It was time to grow up.
