| log = K'del looked around his weyr, pleased with the new configuration, the furniture finally exactly where he wanted it. Milani had been able to visualise it nicely, he decided: it all really did work as she'd suggested, and now the place looked much more like home. As soon as that mattress came in, he'd be set - in the meantime, it still wasn't too much of a hassle to curl up in his new blankets, by the hearth.

Or just stay at Rascela's. You know, big tragedy.

He could feel Cadejoth, in the back of his mind, projecting sheer delight as he looped and soared outside; the bronze had a habit of sharing without intending to, and while sometimes it got a little much, his exhilaration was, in some ways, quite contagious, and perhaps even comforting. Sometimes, K'del could even feel what it was like to fly, to have wings - and that was worth it.

But he kept himself on the ground, separating as much as he could his mind from the bronze's, so that he could concentrate on the weyr itself. He'd already stacked his notes on the desk, along with the lamp he'd finally bought, to replace the one Cadejoth had broken, all those months ago. There was a hook on the wall, now, to hang his straps, and he'd added a cushion to the chair, which looked invitingly comfortable.

But the rug was in the wrong place, with the way the furniture was set out. Off-centre. True, most of the time this wouldn't bother him in the least, but he was too house proud, at this moment, to let it pass. ''If I don't do it now, I never will. Sloppy. Can't be sloppy''.

He could feel Cadejoth's curiousity at this comment, a light brush against his consciousness; he pushed it away - it's nothing, don't worry. And then he leaned down, to lift the edge of the rug, and drag it.

Funny, though, it seemed to be catching on something. He flipped it back, half expecting something awful beneath - but no, what was that, a flicker of something on the floor. He flipped the rug back further, and now he could see it quite clearly: like a little latch, and a panel on the floor.

It wasn't just Cadejoth's excitement he could feel now. So his weyr wasn't as boring as all that (not that he'd ever cared), even if it didn't have-- sporks, or gargoyles, or anything. Carefully, he flicked back the latch, easing it slowly; it was old, and he didn't want to break it. There was no doubt about it: it was supposed to open.

Somehow, K'del wasn't surprised to know that Cadejoth had picked up that concept - the trapdoor - from somewhere. Or that he was eager for something creepy and awful. ''You've been listening to Uanth too much'', he teased, though he could feel his heart beat faster. What if there was something down there? He couldn't hear anything... but did that mean anything? Possibly not.

''<< Haven't! Aren't you going to open it? Oh please, please do! I want to see it. Bet it's something exciting. And then I'll have something to share with Uanth, for once! >>

K'del smiled. ''Of course I'm going to. Give me a minute. Patience!''

But he could feel the bronze's excitement, rippling through him. Through both of them. So he leaned down, tugging at the latch, and finally, his heart beating so fast he felt like it was going to burst through his chest, it came open.

It was too dark to see much of anything, down beneath the trapdoor. He crossed back to the desk, lighting his reading lamp and bring it with him, to peer down into the darkness. Not big, and nothing creeping around in it, either, but-- He stretched out his arm, trying to get a better look. Square-ish, with a single step leading in, though it barely needed that much. Empty.

No. Wait. /Not/ empty. There were a couple of books, sitting tidily on a shelf that had been carved into the stone. He could feel Cadejoth, half frightened, half excited, pushing at his mind, not entirely sure whether he was pushing K'del to go in-- or begging him to stay away. He climbed down anyway, setting his lamp upon the step as he reached across for one of the books. It flipped open, and he began to laugh.

K'del just laughed, staring, delighted and amused, at the detailed illustration on the page in front of him.

Pornography. He'd just found someone's '''pornography'''. And it was '''good'''.
