The office was empty, as it should have been at this time of night. Despite his words to Riorde, he didn't seek sleep. He wanted to think, because he'd realized something.

It wasn't the Weyrleader's ban that made him feel trapped, here in the Weyr.

He knew he didn't belong. But everyone he knew in the entire world was here. What was left of his family. The other islanders. Even if he could have left -- these things held him here.

Duty. His fingers fumbled with the hides, the precious, much loved hides. Oh, how he hated them in that moment. He had to find a match for Riorde. The urge to burn with them warred with the urge to protect them.

Instead, he focused on the names. Traced them, murmuring the lineages to himself as he always did. He found Riorde's name, then in a moment of whimsy, Iolene's. And something he'd never noticed before.

He pulled the glowbasket closer, holding the hide almost against it. In the weak light of the glows they'd had left on the island, he'd never seen that faint mark beside Iolene's name, like a squiggle with a line through it. He traced it with his finger, and it lead to another name.

His heart thudded. He sat, undecided, for a long time, then rolled the hides carefully up and returned them to the pouch.

The infirmary was deserted -- mostly. He'd hoped, briefly, that Madilla would be on duty, but it was an older man. On a scrap of paper, he drew the symbol.

The healer frowned at it for a moment, then explained it expressed a kinship. Like one that described the relationship between dragons and firelizards.

He walked. The cold gave him something else to focus on, but his thoughts kept returning. He needed to talk to Iolene, but what could he tell her?

He couldn't tell her. But he couldn't not.
