With its entrance located between the kitchen and the living cavern, this tiny bubble cavern is cozy, always kept warm and is filled with comfortable chairs and a small round table. At the far end, there's a hearth, outlined in ruddy, aging bricks, where a pot of stew simmers in the evening hours. Generally quiet, the nighthearth is the haunt of insomniacs and those seeking quiet from the bustle of daily Weyr life.

It's still relatively early in the morning, but with turnover celebrations due to start in a few hours, the Weyr is bustling with activity. The nighthearth is an exception to that, for the moment, and thus, Madilla has found herself a quiet spot to sew, with a lamp set out at the table to give her the appropriate light. She's got a mound of patchwork, half draped over her lap, and appears to be adding a border to the nearly-completed piece.

It is for a similiar purpose that Hana finds herself in the secret hideaway for all those who sew. And, oddly enough, for the same purpose - a bit of hemming before the later events; a skirt, it might well seem - in the blue-green color combination that the holder woman favors as often as not. Her steps check, as she clears into the 'hearth, then continues. "I hope company isn't objected to? I find myself with a small amount of hemming to do."

Madilla glances up, a smile blossoming onto her features. "Not at all - please. Everything's so busy today, but I didn't just want to sit in my quarters. There's plenty of room." She tugs at the edges of her quilt, drawing it closer to her, all the better to create space. "Is that for tonight? Such a lovely colour."

"The dorms do not offer much privacy for quiet work - though I've the agreement for my 'mates to have an additional glow if I feel the need to sew." There is a pause, then a grin as Hana continues, "Somehow, the occasional item in need for darning finds its way into the basket since that has been decided." There is a hum, followed by a nod. "I have some hopes for some dancing - with or without music. Does much occur on such dates?" she asks as she makes herself comfortable, pulling the full skirt into her lap to where it is to come up slightly.

"They really don't," agrees Madilla. "I used to work out here as much as I could, when I was an Apprentice. Even now... it's nice to be able to spread out." She shifts her quilt again, moving it so that she can continue her careful stitches down another section of the border. "Oh, plenty. If you'd like to dance, I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunity. Now that we have the High Reaches tithe," as small as it is, by rumour, "it feels like there are things to celebrate."

Hana pauses a moment, in the process of locating her threaded needle, then looks over. "Are the rumours true then?" There is a pause, then she adds delicately, "On the size?" There is a bit of concern in the question, but immediately after asking, she bends her head to her task, hiding most of her expression.

Madilla's gaze lingers on Hana, and perhaps she's attempting to gauge more of the other woman's expression, but if so, she's not overt about it. "That's what I've heard. I don't know for sure about it. It ''was'' a stupid thing that those weyrlings did." But she sounds uncomfortable... and unhappy. "If it's true, we'll all suffer, this winter."

Hana shakes her head, "Winters are never kind; being short will not help in the least." And do a great deal of harm. There is another shake, this more of the manner of shaking off ill thoughts, leading to her looking up. "All the more reason to enjoy this evening then, and start looking at solutions tomorrow, right?" she offers with a bit of a smile - the effort behind it only partially hidden.

Madilla chews on her lip, looking very much as though she'd like to say more - or perhaps just express more. But she nods, and says, with a certain amount of false cheer, "That's true. Celebrate while we can, and deal with it, later. We won't ''starve'', even if we're short."

Hana glances over. "Do you expect other problems?" she asks, before putting aside her skirt and standing to move over to the hearth, searching for a hot pot of.. well, something, given she leave the tea makings behind. "And is there anything you think I might do to help?"

"I don't know," admits Madilla, tucking her needle into the fabric so that she can lift her arms, and stretch, shoulders rolling back. "It feels like there's always another problem, sometimes. But I don't know if there's anything that can be done... if the Weyr's leaders could convince Lord Devaki to give us the whole tithe, I'm sure they would have done so. I don't know if anyone could change things, now." But her expression is uncertain.

Hana finds a pot of klah - at least if that grimance is anything to go by, and pours herself a mug anyway. "Do you want any?" she asks, turning slightly to show off the container, before nodding. "Among other things, he's now made a decision; one of his first." And going back on it.... well.

Madilla hesitates, as if considering that mug of klah, but evidently decides in the negative, shaking her head. "Mm," she agrees. "He has to set the standard for his leadership, now. In these early days. I suppose you know him quite well." The implication in Madilla's tone is that she does not, but it's not ''entirely'' straight. "I suspect he'll be a formidable adversary, if the Weyr allows him to become such."

Rather tartly, "I'd rather he and the Weyr were formidable /allies/, if it is all the same to you," Hana replies with a hint of a grin, before pouring herself that mug. Blargh. As she settles in, she hms, "I... know the husband, more. And the doting father, now. The Lord Holder.... not as such, though there were tells of the aspirations."

"You and me both." Madilla's got a smile for that, a genuine one, as she reaches for her needle again. "Mm. Even when he lived here, when the islanders first arrived, there were tells of those aspirations. It shouldn't have surprised me, that he's ended up where he has." But it did, and that fact is very obvious in her expression, even if she has lowered it back towards her work. "But he is a doting father? A loving husband?"

"I've seen few better," Hana affirms - at least, on what she's seen. There's a slightly wistful cast to the smile, before she puts aside - untasted - her mug of klah, and picks up the skirt. "I don't think he would have settled for anything less, even if he had spent the entirity of his life to strive for it - the only thing that would cause him pause would be those other roles."

It seems to relieve Madilla, somehow; she seems pleased. "I like that sound of that," she admits. "Knowing that-- it's important, I think. I'm sure he'll be a good Lord to his people, too. ''We'' will simply have to repair relations and work towards a better relationship." She makes it sound as though she's partially personal responsible for this; determined, in a quiet way.

Hana chuckles quietly, then admits, "What's even better is when the little ones need to be changed... and somehow everyone else is gone. I... ah.. hide behind something." That's her story, and she's sticking with it. The sound of mirth fades, then she tilts her head. "Do you think we will be able to repair this? Both sides working together, trusted?"

Hana's mirth makes Madilla smile, even if she doesn't outright laugh: there's something still so serious in her expression, even with that smile. "I hope so," is her answer. "I'd like that. I don't like what's happened between the Weyr and Tillek, and, in the past the Weyr and Crom. I hope, with new leadership in both places, new starts, we can work out a positive way forward." She pauses, and then smiles again. "I may be a little idealistic, though. It would be nice, though, wouldn't it? I'm sure it can't be easy for you."

Hana doesn't even pretend to not know what Madilla means; she may misunderstand what the other woman says, but the fact is, "... it hasn't been easy. I am... still trying to decide what to do - and where it would be best to do it." There's a slight shrug, before she finally bends her head to the hemming job in front of her.

"You've thought about going back to the Hold, then," Madilla concludes, her hand hovering over the quilt in front of her; her gaze fastened upon the other woman. "I can't blame you. I ''do'' hope things get easier. It's... difficult, being caught between different things, I know." She gives the other woman a faint smile. "I think it's true for most people who come from outside the Weyr. And crafters, too. At least Aishani's efforts will give us a voice, if we can decide on how to proceed."

There is a simple nod for the not-question, "Though I am uncertain to where my efforts are best put. Really, at the end of the day, I do more for comfort than solving grand problems. I would.. like to think that simply having another body whom appreciates both places will help." There is a pause, before Hana lifts her shoulder.

"I think..." Madilla trails off, considering. "I think that's important, yes. I think it helps people understand that 'other' does not really mean ''different''. It humanises it, if that makes sense. In which case," again, she smiles. "I think you perform a very important service." It's then, sighing, that she cuts her thread, tying it off tidily. "I should pack up. I have a craft council meeting to attend." It doesn't look as though she's looking forward to it.

Hana grins, "I would wish you enjoyment, but I know that look - and I agree - it is just something going around and around in the noggin. Thank you for listening to me though - and... ah.. don't fall asleep, at least?"

Madilla rises, folding her multi-coloured quilt carefully and bundling it away. "I'll do my best," she agrees. "And-- you're welcome to talk to me at any time. Have a pleasant Turnover, Hana." And with that, she leaves.
