| log = That it all happened nearly ten turns to the day since his ascent to Weyrleader made it somehow more poignant - and more painful - for K'del. He felt the news descend into a cold weight in his belly, and tried to will it away. Nearly ten turns, now, since that moment in his own life, and it hadn't been long enough to make it feel less... less... less awful.

He remembered that night, trying to fall asleep and failing; he remembered swearing to himself that never again would he do something like that.

The sentence had not been unjust, not really. But it was so final, and watching it... he had little respect for Fort's Weyrleaders, but even so, he hoped it would haunt their dreams and hurt them in recollection, even as much as he hoped it would not.

Briefly, he considered seeking Milani out. ''She'' would understand in a way Iolene could not... but it seemed wrong, somehow. They were still friends, and they would always be connected by their son, but it was different now.

It wasn't as simple as that.

And the memory still haunted his dreams, sometimes.

His twenty-seventh turnday, the tenth anniversary of his Weyrleadership, was a quiet one. It was hard to imagine himself back all those turns - hard to remember the seventeen-turn-old he'd been. Iolene, Azaylia, Brieli, they all seemed horribly young to him, sometimes, and yet all three were older than he had been.

Iolene was right that perhaps a seventeen turn old should not be given the opportunity to be Weyrleader, and yet... ''I could have been worse. It's not like I've done a bad job. I've done well for High Reaches, I think. Our problems haven't - '''mostly''' -- been my fault.''

Mostly.

He tried to swallow back the fear that it was all about to get much, much worse.
