Actually, it was ''pounding'', and there was a churning feeling in his gut that sent him hurtling over the side of the bed to lose the contents of his stomach into the floor.

He opened his eyes, staring down at the vomitus on the floor. The smell of it made his stomach roll again, but-- no, he wasn't going to throw up a second time. His head was clearer now, too, not that he could remember how he'd gotten back to bed the previous night.

He remembered… it had been like old times. Devaki, Jaques and Tomaeran, same as it had always been, back on the island. Albeit with more-- okay ''any'' alcohol. Tom didn't like to remember the island, much, but he missed the closeness they'd had. Last night had been good. Last night had been--

Oh. Yes.

He was getting married today.

His head pounded.

''Fuck''.

It made him remember, abruptly, that day, more than a decade ago, when he and Seani had been married. It had been an awful day, a death-- no, a ''life'' sentence, and he'd held it against her, hating every moment of it. How ''dare'' she get pregnant. How ''dare'' Cason force him to marry her.

But their son was dead these many Turns, and so was Seani. Five turns, for her. More than one, since Io. One by one, since Kima. His parents. So many people. Everything had changed.

And now it was changing again. Tillek-- well, it didn't seem ''so'' bad. It was a shame that Carilee was not Edeline's kin except by marriage; it would've been nice to one-up Devaki, end up Lord Holder. But Carilee had ambition, and Tom liked that. She reminded him a little of Rhae… he hoped she panned out better than Rhae ever had.

After all, Edeline had no heir - just a toddler, a little girl. Why ''not'' adopt one of her step-daughters… especially if she were married with an heir of her own. That would be step one.

Well, no. Step one would be bathing, and finding someone to bring him some wine. He was getting ''married'' today, after all!

"Happy wedding day, Tom-of-Tillek."

He paused.

"Lord Tomaeran and Lady Carilee."

He just ''knew'' he could sell her on that.
