|log=Irianke had no idea how to start this letter. The drums had already sounded across Pern and Niahvth had already reported in to Breileth, but Nimae would be expecting a personal report.

She stared at the sheet before her and started writing, then immediately crossed it out.

Slowly, the new Reachian goldrider put the ruined sheet away, methodically slotting the quill into its ink pot, and reached for a chalkboard instead but almmost immediately returned it.

The middle-aged woman rose and drew on a robe over her nightgown. Her hair she'd leave tousled. Hurried steps carried her from her weyr to the lower caverns.

"Make sure the hearth and candles are lit in the Weyrwoman's weyr for when she returns. Have that lad," Irianke gestured to the young boy peeling tubers for tomorrow's meal, "Go outside and be on the lookout for Hraedhyth and when she arrives," this time, the former Igen rider addressed the young boy, "Be sure to come immediately here and tell whoever is on duty then to prepare a tray for the Weyrwoman. Some wine, something comforting to eat. There's a storm headed for the Weyr."

As she walked away, she realized belatedly that the storm might not be merely metaphorical.

Irianke slipped through the lower caverns, uncaring of the looks her robe-garbed figure garnered, and went up the tunnel towards the bowl and stood there to watch Glacier prepare to depart. She caught sight of the riders and felt a twinge in her head, causing her gaze to drift to where her ledge was. Where Niahvth sat at the ready, suddenly alert and watching. She felt the mental caress from her dragon wash over her and radiate in a warm spring sun to the dragons called to a late night duty.

<< Thank you, >> she said simply to her dragon.

<< What we can do we must, >> was Niahvth's terse response back, the mental effort it was taking to channel strength and wakefulness making it difficult to even confer with the love of her life.

Her walk back to her weyr was slower, paused at intervals by the Weyr's residents with questions. "High Reaches Hold has need of us tonight," she would say, not clarifying on just what was needed or what had happened. They'd know soon enough. She lied with the ease of a stage actress playing a role, allowing a wearied smile on her lips to ease worries and compel a gentle compliance, "Go about your business and hopefully morning will bring good news."

She stopped by the kitchens again, this time getting herself a large goblet of wine before she headed into the records room. Some latitude was afforded rank, and she made her way to a table. Several volumes were selected from the Reaches records, recent history and census data of their areas.

Briefly, her thoughts strayed to the charismatic Lord Holder she had just met the other day, and her head bowed, eyes closed, and her lips moved in a thought filled moment of silence for the man who lost his wife.

It would be a long night, and she wanted to be ready for when the Weyrleaders returned, armed with whatever they might need to know.
