It was N'qui who called them all together: their parents, Rysa from Monaco, Lyarel from his posting out Honshu way. He could have called in others - uncles and aunts, cousins, the whole bit - but that didn't seem wholly fair.

Quinlys didn't like to hear it. She ranted and raved; she wanted to throw a tantrum.

It had been a long time since she'd let her temper loose like that, and it was both liberating and terrifying.

"Quin," said her father, quietly. "Do you ''want'' to lose your position?"

"''Use'' the system, Q," said N'qui. "Didn't you listen to that girl in the caverns the other day? You need to teach those new riders to be part of High Reaches, even if they're sent away. Teach them to care."

"He's right," said Lyarel, quietly. The only non-rider in the family, he'd been silent until this point. "If you keep up with this, they'll have no choice but to fire you, and then you've no power at all."

"They ''need'' me," she argued, stridently, her cheeks flushed with frustration and annoyance. "None of my assistants could take over."

"They'd find someone," was Lysanne's answer, her mother's answer.

It was her father who stood up, crossing towards his daughter to put his arm around her shoulders. She nestled in to him, feeling some of her tension uncoil beneath his embrace. "You're good at what you do, Quinlys. You've always been good at whatever you put your mind to. It's time to swallow your pride."

Her voice came out not much above a whisper.

"I don't know how."

She threw herself into her work, instead. Preparations. Lesson plans. New ideas. She avoided the caverns; avoided the temptation of social gatherings. She kept her comments short and clipped, when asked.

It felt as though her wings had been clipped.

It felt awful.

The worst part was that it might already be too late; there might be a sword hanging over her head, and she didn't even know about it.

That was the worst part.

At night, though, she curled up against Olveraeth's side and felt at peace.

Together, surely, they could survive ''anything''.
