| Somewhere along the line a note arrives for Telavi, in elegant and precise black script, suggesting the potential for beach running between friends and of course catching up. Edyis waits at the appointed spot in the bowl, bag slung over her shoulder patiently, an eager grin across her lips. It's early in the afternoon, but not so early as to interfere with normal duties. Weyrlings and other commitments kept Telavi too busy for the first few opportunities, but then... the appointed time is here. Tela has a bright smile of her own for the girl as she helps her up, for all that she's more practiced than when she'd taken her to her family hold, and it's an equally quick trip to somewhere warm indeed. "Recognize where we are?" Tela asks with a laugh as they circle above the jungly land; it may be hard to tell this low whether they're above the mainland or an island, but the black sand to the coastline might well be a giveaway. Edyis grins. "Ista, you don't see many black sand beaches anywhere else I'd wager." She's not nearly as long to get untangled this time at least as they arrive. "Never thought you'd be able to get away. Heat feels good." "Good!" Telavi looks just as pleased and proud as though it had been a much more uncertain question. "Neither did I," she adds as she slides down, afterwards taking a deep, deep breath of the island air; this far away from Hold or Weyr, it's fresh as an outgoing tide allows. Then there's work, removing Solith's straps, removing her excess clothes until she's barefoot in shorts and sleeveless blouse, her hair in the same bouncing ponytail as before. "Do you have any new favorite stretches, Edyis?" Edyis strips too, attired similarly though perhaps noticeably covered in bruises of varying hues and ages. Plopping down on the sand and spreading her legs she starts to stretch. "Learned a bunch of new ones, with the self-defense training, but the classics seem to be the best ones." Stretching each leg, then changing positions to do another set of stretches. "So what have you been up to with the weyrlings these days." Quick green-today eyes glance, glance again, but don't linger; Tela's dropping into lunges, keeping her back aligned, her gaze moving out to sea. "Mmm. Moving from flights-- already, sigh-- towards flaming, which really, it's just as well they're in that order. How about you, what's keeping you perky?" The young woman scrunches her nose, "I bet that was a hoot with V'ros. " The words brimming with sarcasm, overflowing with it. "Training and work mostly, though I hear there are a few gathers coming up soon in the next few months that are worth looking forward to." "What do you have against V'ros?" Telavi asks lightly, laughingly, as though all that sarcasm were just for their shared entertainment. She flexes, stretches, swings one foot high above her head and then alternates with the next. "Other than his habit of creating incredibly awkward moments, and turning normal social events into something that makes me want to crawl under a table and die." As she starts working through another set, looking very much like a seal. "He has the mind of a twelve year old. And considering I watched him literally climb the back of a booth in the snowasis, I can only imagine his escape attempts from THE TALK." She giggles. "You sound as though you have a crush on him," Telavi marvels, giving her a sidelong look from beneath her lashes. "I'll grant you he's down in the dumps just about all the time, but sometimes these things take people hard," she adds with the easy confidence of someone who sees this sort of thing all the time... whether or not she does. This glance to Edyis is more arch. "What were you doing to the poor boy?" Edyis looks like she might vomit for a moment at the word crush She even feigns a gag for Telavi's benefit. "Me?" The hurt is likely feigned but she snorts. "He crashed what I guess A'rist thought was supposed to be a date. Not that I minded the date part I guess, but I would have dressed nicer." Muttering now, as she stands stretching out sides and arms. "If he crashed it," Telavi, so confused, "why would he have to climb a booth to get away? You know it's all right to smile at him and say that you're busy. You and... A'rist," Tela says with a shake of her head that sets her ponytail swinging. "I offered to buy him a drink as a peace offering, which in retrospect was probably the first mistake. How do those two know each other anyway?" She asks and she laughs at the response. "I was a little surprised myself that he seemed think it was a date, didn't think he was all that interested." Edyis is wriggling her toes in the sand as she finishes her stretching. "They live here?" Tela teases, marking an 'x' in the sand with her toes-- the black sand that is very much not High Reaches. "Well, A'rist, whatever. I just-- I don't remember your being so... angry, annoyed, whatever with people," she follows up with genuine concern. "Did it just not show up, before?" Now she's jogging in place, all set to take off as soon as Edyis seems ready. "Oh come on Telavi, you know all the gossip on the weyrlings." She snorts, though as Telavi continues she does grow a little thoughtful. "Have I really changed so much, or into something so terrible that you are worried?" Setting off at a moderate jog at first. "You flatter me," Telavi says lightly, regardless of whether it's true; she angles towards the damp sand that the sunwarmed waves rush up to where the footing's more solid, and then further in so they splash about her ankles. "It seems like you've changed a lot," she admits as she runs, "and quickly. Or maybe it wasn't that quickly, and you were that way all along? I just... and I don't mean this as judging you? But you don't sound happy, either," she wistfully winds up with. Her breathing's quicker now, but she can still keep up the conversation. The easy pace, the feel of damp sand under bare feet, its relaxing Edyis at least. "Did I seem that happy before?" Eyebrows arching, finding the tempo, "I'm not unhappy, I'm still finding my way. I'm more honest about things now. I don't just smile like a simpering idiot because I know I can't change things, and acting otherwise wouldn't do a damn thing. Not anymore." It's a deep exhale, "It wasn't fast. It just seems that way, more so probably because you didn't see the day to day. In some ways I'm more myself than I've ever been." Tela glances right at Edyis as they run, her brows tugged into a vee, "Why call yourself an idiot? And simpering-- did you really feel like one?" Edyis picks up the pace not so much as to halt the conversation, "Nave then. If we want to mince words, It's what I did though - just smiled no matter how I really felt. Did the right thing, because it was what was expected. I don't think I had a thought of my own in my head before I came to High Reaches." "That doesn't make you an idiot," says Telavi, and bounds high in a leap before taking over the quickened pace. "But-- being cruel to who you used to be-- were you always as angry, before? Weren't you kind, and thoughtful to your family, even if they did tell you what to do?" As families do. At first it seems like the pace prevents the young scribe from responding, she shakes her head. "You learn to repress a lot." Comes simply, "Is that what you see now? Someone cruel and hard?" Not looking at the older woman as she speaks, since the running takes most of her focus. "Cruel to yourself," Telavi says, softly for all the repetitive pound of her steps-- softly, and as inexorably as they. "And V'ros-- such contempt. There's no great distance in her voice; perhaps she's all too familiar with that herself. Between breaths, and skirting debris she finally replies, after some thought. "I don't hate him. Frankly I deserved the embarrassment, I just hadn't expected everything to go so wrong. " She finishes numbly. They run, and they run. "What were you saying," Telavi asks at last, "about being more honest now?" Edyis laughs, "I don't hold everything in anymore." Starting to slow now, "And I do the things that I want to do, regardless of what others might say or think. Which reminds me, Do you know anyone that has a punching bag somewhere less public than the workout room? I'd like to maintain the illusion that I'm completely harmless for a while." The last playful in tone as her smile widens. "Then don't be surprised when they react without regard for you," Telavi says. She glances landward, back at Edyis, one more time... and then her gaze swings ahead. Lightly, "As for punching bags, I might know one or two-- oh! A shell!" With that she slows all of a sudden, circling back to get a better look at the shiny. Edyis snorts. "Ah yes because people reacted with regard before." The reply comes before the sudden shiny has wrested Telavi's attention. Laughing, but content to enjoy the pace, and the company finishing out the run and returning home. |
