'''Egg Inspiration:''' I mostly just thought that this would be an interesting concept for a mask egg, since it's not what usually comes to mind first. It's not the elegant masquerade concoctions or the hideous costumes, but something routine and completely mundane. I also liked the idea of a ritual that involved getting ugly to become more beautiful.

Beauty's Price Egg

Thick, creamy avocado color is slicked in one thick layer across this egg's shell. The consistency in color is lost when one looks at the shape of the egg, though, for this one has bulges and irregularities where there should be only smooth sides. All told, it's rather an ugly little egg, but it holds the promise of impermanence, with something far more alluring lurking just beneath its hardened surface.

Beauty's Price Egg continues to slough off its unsightly green shell, becoming somewhat more grotesque as the remaining exterior is overcome with thick, viscous contents. Larger sections begin to break away, leaving a rather more attractive green blob on the sands in the vague shape of a dragon.

Girl By The Sea Green

At a master's hands she was carved of stone and now the immeasurable passage of time seems to have left its marks on this green. Her instinctive poise lends an air of immobility to her lithe, athletic figure, yet her movements are free and fluid, unrestrained by her statuesque appearance. Rich undercurrents of gray are so covered with verdigris that the combination ever reveals new shades of oceanic green across the shapely curves of her shoulders and haunches. Neckridges have been eroded, softening their points, and at their bases have accumulated a glittering gathering of ancient salts. In the translucence of her wings, tightly repeated waves of color create the illusion of scales in their undulating sheen. Her face received special care from her sculptor; noble and elegant are her features, accented by long, curved headknobs. Clear, perceptive eyes are rimmed with an adamantine pallor that lends an otherworldly glow to her gaze.

Temperament

Sviath is the sea to your sky, intrinsically connected through the motion and heat of currents, each affecting the other, and yet, like the sea, she runs deep and unknowable, an ancient font of inexplicable instinct. She is a creature of intuition, which may very well make you crazy at times when she seems so certain and yet has no logic to explain it. And she likely doesn't bother trying. The world is what it is, and in it she follows her own rhythms, her own swells and lulls. She is fearlessly unshackled from society's paradigm and encourages you, too, to march to your own drummer, to follow your instinct and intuition into the unknown. Sometimes this is a comfort and an inspiration, and other times you may well feel that she is an irrational, emotional creature in need of a good shaking. But no matter your disagreements, she remains resolutely certain that there is strength in a woman's way of knowing and she will ever encourage you to follow your heart.

As a young dragon, Sviath will be at once understanding and curious about the world around her. Her questions will be sparse, simple queries, often insightful, and from the answers she will often make her own assumptions. Sometimes her intuition will turn that assumption into a pearl of wisdom. Other times you might find her skipping some very important steps in her logic. « I am tired; it is time to sleep, » And she prepares to do so right there even though she is currently in the lake with you scrubbing under her wing or you are in the middle of a try to fit her for straps. And those straps might just have to stay tucked around her while she snoozes. Who will win the battle of logic versus instinct or are they merely the same animal wearing different skins?

She is often a calm creature, observing the world, feeling the rhythm of things, but without warning Sviath can leave all semblance of sanity behind, her emotions taking over fully. Whether it's indignation, sorrow or the wound of a cutting remark or deed, her impenetrable facade may turn suddenly to a torrent of gut reaction sending her into a fury or leaving her to wallow.

Her emotions flow the other way, too. A single act of goodness or creativity from someone can fill her with waves of love and adoration. The beauty of a sunset can stop her in her tracks, letting the sweet sorrow of the world wash over her. « Don't move. Look up, » she might urge with reverence. Will you stop with her?

Water and air will be the things that inspire her most, their fluid nature. At first it may be the lake, bathing, but when she starts to truly flex her wings, her attention turns to the sky. How she longs to fly! And when you can fly together, she will like nothing better than to head toward the sea, to skim over the surf and feel the interaction of water and air. It is when she is immersed in water or sky that she feels she is most at one with the world.

You may find as Sviath gets older that one peculiarity of her weyrlinghood will persist. She has a special affection for her sisters and while she has no particular distaste for males, it's with other females that she takes comfort and you will likely see her cozying up with another green before she thinks to snuggle with a male. The boys have her respect when warranted, sometimes affection, but something deeper draws her to the kindred spirit of femininity.

She believes the world is capable of good, that in every spirit is the ability to rise in the face of adversity, that with cooperation and community every individual can be equal and valued. Bullies, those who put others down, stir an anger in her and she will strive to protect the weak or delicate, to take them under her wing and encourage them to stand up tall. A leader of any sort who throws their weight around and makes those around them feel small will build frustrations in her and you may find her considering leadership herself. After all, who better to do I right than her and you. Sviath has unflagging faith in you and is constantly impressed with your sense of self-reliance, proud of your determination. She will ever encourage you to follow your dreams, throw off the constraints of what you think you should be and be the spectacular creature that you are.

As you gather more of your own experiences under your belt, you may find that there is more to her strange way of knowing than you may originally have thought. She reads the currents of her surroundings, be it nature or society, with an innate aplomb and by now you have started to wonder if there isn't something to it -- odd moments when her predictions have come true, when her inexplicable decisions have saved you from a disaster of some sort. Through her constant example, you might just become more in tune to your own intuitions.

As Sviath prepares to rise, you may feel as though you are a weyrling again wondering who's shoulder is itching or who's stomach is rumbling; the tie between you grows thick and sticky, blurring around the edges. Like warm ocean currents turning the air to a hurricane headed for the shore, you may find it hard to control your own emotions as her surging feeling leaves you open and raw to the forces of your own nature.

While she is rarely one to snuggle with boys, now she will not tolerate anyone's closeness but yours. Any male who is drawn to the glow of her hide may get a vicious hiss for the slightest of advances. If you have or take a lover during this time, she will show no tolerance for their presence in her weyr, and with both of you so emotional, this unusual disregard for your needs could easily cause some friction.

It is her abhorrence of everyone that will finally send her into the air, anything to get away from them-, but how quickly it will vanish when she's in the sky and those males that she rarely gives much thought to suddenly seem so very intriguing. You may find that, when she has her way in the sky, it is the blues and browns with female riders that catch her; as always there is something she finds soothing and safe about the presence of other females.

Public Impression Message

Girl By the Sea Green lets out a final hiss, her temper suddenly soothed by some unseen change. With import she turns her head and fixes her intense gaze on a candidate. But which? She moves, stone come to life, toward a slim youbg woman with short, sable hair.

Private Impression Message

Did time just stop? Has everyone turned to stone? The activity of the sands seems to grow still and gray, fading from your vision until only one thing remains clear: the noble face of a young green dragon. Her light-rimmed eyes meet with yours and your ears fill with the sounds of water lapping the quiet, hidden halls of a cistern. « Hali. » The waters rush forth, free of confines, gushing out into the world, gushing into your heart in a torrent. « This is a magnificent place for us. For you and me. For always. » Immediately she absorbs the world around her and shares the overwhelming emotion it creates in her. « I am Sviath. Your Sviath. »

Mindvoice

There is something watery in her voice, something cool and refreshing. Faint sounds of sloshing might accompany her words, and also the colored patterns of light through water's ever moving surface. But as water is fluid, it reacts very quickly to the shift of her emotions, easily churning with unease or bubbling with excitement. And when she is good and truly enraged, her waters boil and froth, hisses of steam melding with the fury of her voice.

Itchyspots

Those long, gracefully curved headknobs might be a point of beauty, but they also itch her regularly. While she's small enough not to knock you right over, she might take to rubbing them on you. Also needing special attention are the bases of her neckridges; no matter how the pale hide might flake off, the new skin beneath hardly deepens in its green and you may be tempted to pick at them even when they don't need any exfoliation, simply because they so often do and always seem to look like they might want it.

Dragon Inspirations

The monster Medusa is the inspiration for your Sviath Leaving the details of the original myths aside, we've focused on Medusa as a symbol of the allure, danger and secrets of the female archetype, particularly those females living outside of societal norms, and we've taken those themes of female strength and melded them with the lives of Cicely and Roslyn of Northern Exposure at your request. Her imagery is a mixture of stone and sea, taking stone from Medusa's petrifying visage and using the sea, as Medusa was born of sea titans, to illustrate her emotional nature and sense of something deeper and more ancient than the human mind can comprehend. In short she has become a passionate female, the sort who leaves the constraints of society behind to follow her own path, much like Cicely and Roslyn and nearly everyone else who finds a home in the oasis of acceptance that is Cicely, Alaska.

The name Sviath was formed from the Inuit word 'niviasar' meaning 'girl', chosen for all of Sviath's connections to that which is female.

Egg Inspiration: I mostly just thought that this would be an interesting concept for a mask egg, since it's not what usually comes to mind first. It's not the elegant masquerade concoctions or the hideous costumes, but something routine and completely mundane. I also liked the idea of a ritual that involved getting ugly to become more beautiful.
