Just when things started looking like the exiles were going to make it--what ones of them hadn't died already, of course--another one fell suddenly and severely ill. Jaques' brother Ramsay, three turns younger, had always been a healthy boy, but since the exiles' discovery and rescue, he's been stretching himself thin: not eating even when there's food they could keep down; plotting in corners; belligerently insisting the exiles can take care of their own sick (and trying to help himself, despite his father's attempts to calm his outspoken son until they knew better what was going on).

So it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, when toward lunchtime on Day 8, the feverish look in Ramsay's eyes turned out to be real fever, and he collapsed. The healers quickly hauled him to the infirmary, but despite his youth and previous good health, Ramsay continued to worsen and finally died early the next morning, one of the only fatalities not already very young, very old, or very infirm to start with.
