Western Bowl, High Reaches Weyr

Leova treads carefully across the bowl, losing her way a time or two even with the glowbasket she carries. Eventually she manages to approach the caverns. "Summer," she says mostly to herself and the basket. "They call this summer."

You stride through the archway, into the lower caverns.

Lower Caverns, High Reaches Weyr (#1090RIJs)

This large cavern is alive with activity as people congregate to finish up projects, plan out new ones or simply socialize. A quieter corner is usually filled with people in earnest conversation, the occasional laughter ringing out from the living caverns where noisier groups converse. Last minute errands are completed quickly, folks eager to relax after a busy day. Sleepy eyed children wander through murmuring protests as they are taken off to bed and the weyr's early risers head back up towards the living quarters in search of quieter pastimes.

Passageways lead off in many directions around the cavern, forming a nexus of sorts. An archway opens up into the bowl; a wide tunnel leads out of the weyr; along the wall near the kitchen is an outcropping of rock that shelters a crevice in the wall; a well worn set of stairs rise up to the living quarters of the Weyr staff; and sounds and smells from the south indicate the presence of the living cavern and kitchen.

Leova, for all her earlier mutterings, daringly walks across the bowl with her jacket partly unbuttoned. It must be summer after all! Now, inside, she stashes her glowbasket on the shelf and starts tugging off her jacket before ever bothering to look around.

Sarisia nods her head, her legs spread out lazily in front of her as she relaxes. But in a moment she gets up with a jolt, wincing her eyes. "Shard it all, I knew I forgot something." She says quickly, her blue eyes darting up at the ceiling above. "I hear ya." She mutters to herself before looking back down at Jarina. ""Fraid I've gotta run, I've an errand to attend to that my lovely lifemate just informed me 'bout." With a firm nod she takes in the womans appearance one more time, as if trying to memorizing the name and face so as to remember her in the future. "If ya ever need a rider to Ista let me know." She says with a grin and after grabbing up her jacket she runs out shouting out. "Take care!" Behind her shoulder.

Leova tries to duck out of Sarisia's way, but it's more like a hobble, a wherry with one wing clipped. Something about it, though, gets her laughing.

Jarina smiles over at Sarisia as she runs off. "Clear skies, Sarisia!" She waves after her, then smiles over at Leova and waves a greeting to her. "Good evening!"

Jarina

Jarina is a cheerful woman, apparently in her early 30s. She has bright red hair that flows down her back in a long runnertail, well past her waist, as well as arching red eyebrows. Her jade green eyes are rimmed with long eyelashes, and her cupid-bow's mouth grins brightly. She has just a hint of a dimple in her chin that is visible when she smiles. Freckles dance across her cheekbones and her little pug nose, which is pierced by a silver ring that just touches the edge of her upper lip. Six pairs of silver hoops glisten in her ears, ranging from small loops near the top to heavy hoops in her earlobes that reach nearly to her shoulders. A wide silver band hugs the base of her neck, fit precisely to follow the curves of her throat. Her skin is only lightly tanned, thanks to the 'Reaches climate.

Jarina is clad primarily in green, a light short sleeved shirt suitable for summer which shows her missing arm clearly. Her right arm ends just above where her elbow might have been with a smoothly rounded end. The V-neck and sleeves are both trimmed in black, the dark strips stitched with interlocking diamonds that are the same green as the rest of the shirt. A matching jade skirt swirls around her legs, loose enough not to restrict movement, the same black-and-green trim on the waistband and hem as is seen on the shirt. Simple sandals encase her feet, while her good arm is adorned with a couple thick metal bracelets that gleam with a silvery sheen to match her earrings and nose ring.

Leova's laughter stalls but she's still left with a surprised smile. "Good evening," she replies after a moment, and folds her jacket a little more neatly over her arm. Her eyes can't help but be drawn to the older woman's right elbow, or lack thereof, but she tries to look quickly away and towards the woman's face.

Jarina smiles reassuringly at Leova and nods to her. She holds the short arm-stub out toward her. "Its okay, I don't mind if you want to look." She nods to the seat beside her, on the same side as the short arm. "Feel free to have a seat if you like."

Leova's blush is visible even with her skin so weathered. "Does everyone ask that?" she wonders, approaching but not sitting. "People who live here, I suppose they're more used to it. To things like it."

Jarina smiles and nods slowly, glancing back and forth between the end of the short bicep and Leova's face. "Well, not everyone asks, but I think most /want/ to when they first notice it. Its okay, I don't mind."

Leova looks at her closely, and then at her bicep, and then at Jarina's face again. And since the woman volunteered, "What happened?"

Jarina smiles up at Leova and shrugs a bit. "Not sure, really. I was born like this."

Leova's eyes widen, but she doesn't say anything right off. Instead, she says carefully, "I'm glad that you weren't injured." She refolds her jacket, looking down at it for a moment, then back at Jarina. "Hadn't seen any scarring. But healers. They can do things. Sometimes."

Jarina nods, reaching her hand out to lightly rub against the smooth end of her arm. "Yeah, but this is how I was born." She nods to the seat beside her again. "C'mon and sit down?"

Leova admits, and she's not having as much trouble not looking at Jarina's arm now, "Was going to grab something to eat. Someone said something about... altitude?" She does rest a knee on the seat, though, even if she doesn't actually sit. "Tillek is pretty low. Ocean and all."

Jarina ahhs and nods. "I had dinner earlier already. I was just wandering around when I ran into Sarisia earlier and got talking with her."

"That's who that was?" Leova tucks the jacket's collar in. "I had dinner too. It isn't dinner's fault, it's mine."

Jarina smiles and nods to Leova. "Yeah. She's a Brownrider. I don't know her real well, especially since she doesn't have any kids."

"Kids?" Leova's face goes momentarily blank. "Kids... do you know Niena?"

Jarina giggles amusedly at the expression on Leova's face and nods a bit. She lifts a hand up to tug thoughtfully at one of her huge silver hoop earrings. "Oh, yeah. I know her. She works more with the babies than I do."

Leova's stomach rumbles, not quietly. She lifts her chin a little and ignores it, aided by the swing of the earring. "Which age do you work with?"

Jarina glances down toward Leova's middle as she hears the grumble, giggling a bit. "Sounds like you do need something more to eat all right..." She smiles and continues, "Younger kids, but not /that/ young. Mostly the ones who're at least potty trained, but not old enough to be in Harper lessons yet. Or some of the ones who are, between classes."

Leova looks too, only a flicker but there. She says through her teeth, "It'll keep," and then smiles again. "Trained. I like that. The ones they had me helping with, few days ago, weren't."

Jarina giggles and nods, tugging lightly at her earring again. "Yeah, I hear lots of complaints about nursery duties when there are Candidates around. Most of 'em don't seem to like helping out with the babies for that reason."

Leova asks, "Got any suggestions? For working with them. Besides getting assigned to the older ones, I mean."

Jarina hmms thoughtfully and shrugs a bit. "Depends on what part it is you don't like so much. I don't mind working with the little kids, but I'm not as quick with them as I really need to be."

Leova tilts her head. "Quick, meaning the way they think? Or catching them?" Again her stomach rumbles. Again she ignores it.

Jarina shakes her head again and glances down at her missing arm. "I'm just not very nimble with only one hand. I can manage by myself usually, but a nanny in the nursery has to take care of a bunch of babies, it just takes me too long to change a diaper."

Leova guesses, humor sparking in her eyes, "And the other nannies don't exactly want to do all the diapers themselves?"

Jarina giggles a bit and shakes her head. "Nope. And I don't want them to either. That's not fair to them. I want to do my fair share of work too." She smiles at Leova and rises to her feet, lifting her arms over her head to stretch. "I think I'm gonna go take a quick dip in the baths before I head off to bed."

Leova eases back as the other woman stands. "Wish everyone did! Name's Leova, by the way. Night."

Jarina grins brightly at Leova. "Oh, and I'm Jarina. Nice to meet you properly."

Leova returns the smile, pushing her hair out of her face with her free hand, and makes tracks for the cavern. Food! Must have food!
