Of Productivity
"I give misbehaving weyrlings essays to write, to be handed in the next day. I find it more productive."
RL Date: 8 October, 2006
Who: Kali, Kayara, Kazara, R'hin
Involves: High Reaches Weyr
Type: Log
When: Day 26, Month 5, Turn 9 (Interval 10)

Your location's current time: 18:58 on day 26, month 5, Turn 59, of the Tenth Pass. It is a spring evening.

You climb down Leiventh's side to the ground, as the dragon rumbles softly. Igen Weyr Main Beach This is one of the most popular sections of the Igen Bowl, and the reason can't really be mistaken. The lake to the north provides a refreshing change from the heat that characterizes the climate of this area. A small beach of pumice sand runs along the shore here, making it a nice spot to relax. The waters of the lake are a deep blue, reflecting perfectly the sheer cliffs to the north. The lake looks inviting, and a smaller beach to the north provides a more isolated spot. Eastwards a large field leads towards a pass out of the Weyr, and heading southeast takes you across the center of the bowl. To the south lies the corral. Kali comes onto the beach from the field to the east. Kali has arrived.

Xiabeth has arrived. Kali sets Xiabeth to rights gently

Zimarath comes onto the beach from the field to the east. Zimarath has arrived.

Kayara comes onto the beach from the field to the east. Kayara has arrived.

Kazara ambles over from the center of the bowl. Kazara has arrived.

Kali and Xiabeth are nestled into a niche on the sand of the beach. There is a pile of pretty shells next to them. Kali is rambling to the dragon. "There are lots of things... everything has its own name. No you can't have everything. Because it won't fit. If we had everything... no you can't. Because... I was trying to explain..." she babbles, out loud, to the new dragon.

The faint call of the watchdragon challenging a new arrival precedes Leiventh's descent to the warm Igen sands, the High Reaches dragon setting down a little distance from the weyrling pair with the faintest kick of sands. R'hin slides to the ground a moment later, shrugging out of his flying gear. Leiventh's head unerringly turns to examine Xiabeth with a low rumble of greeting, drawing the Reachian bronzerider's attention that way. "Well," he says by way of greeting, as he crosses the sand towards Kali, eyes on the young dragon. "What's her name?" he asks, even though he probably knows through Leiventh.

Kazara wanders onto the beach just in time to hear Kali in a (at least verbally) one-sided conversation with her new green dragonet. She glances around and sees the beach is fairly well-populated this evening. The new arrival gives her a slight fright at first, having not heard him fly in from behind, but she regains her composure quickly. "Evening, Kali, Kayara, er...bronzerider," she adds for the new arrival.

Leiventh> To you, Leiventh examines the small weyrling dragon. « Tiny, » is his only observation.

Kayara sits on a rock near the beach, her own young dragonet splashing noisily in the shallows of the water. She's watching her dragonet with an amused expression before looking over in surprise at the arrival of a bronzerider. She then gets to her feet and gives a bow, "Igen's greetings to you bronzerider." She greets before looking over to Kazara, "Good evening Assistan Weyrlingmaster Kazara." She politely greets with a smile on her face.

Kali looks up, startled a bit when R'hin arrives, though she seems to be more startled that he appears to have been looking for her. "Her name is Xiabeth." she says with the biggest grin on her face. Then remembers she's supposed to salute, bounds to her feet and snaps a crisp salute to the Reachian weyrleader, just in time to include Kazara in it as well. "Good evening, both of you." she say formally before looking over her shoulder. "No, you can only have one person... we can't keep them no." she says before turning and blushing at the two more experienced riders. She rolls her eyes at the splashing dragon in the water.

R'hin casts a glance over his shoulder at Leiventh, lips curving with abrupt amusement, the emotion lighting pale eyes as his attention shifts back, drifting from Kayara to Kazara and back. "High Reaches duties to Igen and her queens, and the newest dragons." A curve of lips, before he corrects Kazara smoothly, "Weyrleader." And back to Kali, "Xiabeth, hm?" another close look at both the weyrling dragons, something Leiventh seems to be doing as well, though the bronze is otherwise still, not given to the playfulness the new Igen dragons display.

Kazara smiles and nods, then thinks for a moment. "Ah, yes. Of course. Kali, you have the right idea. Kayara?" she asks, looking at the weyrling pointedly. "I might give you an essay if you're not quick enough," she warns with a raised eyebrow. Then she peers a little closer at R'hin, and recognises the knot pattern on his shoulder. "Oops! Apologies, Weyrleader. I couldn't quite see properly in this light."

Kayara widens her eyes in surprise as she looks at R'hin, trying not to stare. So this was the rider Kali had been talking about who had recently become Weyrleader. Still new to the Weyrling thing she realizes her lapse and salutes to both R'hin and Kazara, "Well met Weyrleader R'hin." She corrects herself, looking rather embarrassed. Well at least she's not the only one who made an error. She then lowers her gaze, "My apologies Assistant Weyrlingmaster Kazara." She replies. Zimarath on the other hand has noticed Leiventh and looks up at the bronze, apparently surprised by his size in comparison to her.

Kazara nods at Kayara. "Well...I'll let you off this time, but next time..." The threat hangs in the air for a bit before crashing onto the sand in a fireball of silence. "Now...what brings you here to our gentle lakeshores, Weyrleader?" she asks courteously, giving a glance and a nod to the massive Leiventh, and a smile for Zimarath's curiosity.

Kali nods to R'hin. "Yes, Sir." she says, the term said in an acutal respectful tone and she smiles at him. "Isn't she just perfect?" she blurts. Xiabeth gets to her feet at this point and totters towards the bronze dragon. "Xiabeth no... you can't have one of him either. Because...ummm..." she tries to come up with a good reason the dragon can't collect other dragons. "Because they're not ours..." she tries, nope, the look on her face assures the crowd that is not an acceptable answer. She steps closer to R'hin and his dragon, curious about this large shiny dragon before her. She croons at him. "Because Weyrleader R'hin would not like if we took him home." she says firmly and the dragon swings her head to look at Kali. They stare at each other for a moment and Kali smile, perhaps proud of herself for standing up to the bullheaded dragonette

"Essay?" R'hin echoes, with bland amusement, though he holds any further opinion on the subject. "I hope you don't mind if I disturb your weyrlings briefly, Assistant Weyrlingmaster?" the query is accompanied by a rise of brow in Kazara's direction. "Since I was unable to attend the hatching, I wanted to see Igen's newest first hand." Kali's conversation with her new dragon earns a twitch of lips, though he doesn't draw attention to it, instead offering an easy grin in Kayara's direction, unbothered by her mistake. "He looks like he'll be big." Leiventh, taking note of the attention from Zimarath, abruptly stretches his wings wide, then tucks them back, settling down against the sand. Only the slight glint of whirling eyes indicates he's watching the two weyrling dragons now. He pays absolutely no attention to the people.

Leiventh> To you, Leiventh seems pleased by the attention, keenly interested in the dragons. « Lhiannonth and mine will look like these? »

Kazara nods. "Yeah, I give misbehaving weyrlings essays to write, to be handed in the next day. I find it more productive," she says with a little smirk. "After the first few, the number I gave out declined dramatically." She laughs a little at Xiabeth's innate curiosity. "She'll be a handful when she gets older, Kali. You'd better curb her collective habits now while you still can."

Kayara nods glumly to Kazara, her shoulders slumped, "I promise I won't forget." She remarks, suddenly feeling afraid. Just great, her first day as a Weyrling and she messes up. To take her mind off it she looks over at Kali and Xiabeth with amusement. The two made quite a pair. When the Weyrleader speaks she nods politely to him, "Yes, I certainly think so." She replies before look back to her dragonet and shaking her head, "No Zim, he's a bronze. You won't get that big." She replies to her dragonet's mentally spoken question.

Kali looks over to examine Kayara's dragon for a moment. "She's going to be bigger than Xiabeth. That's for sure." she says, as a comment. She sighs. "No Xiabeth, darling, you can't have..." she trails off when Kazara makes her comment because the new dragonet trundles towards her and glares. "Xiabeth. Stop that." Kali says sharply. She nods to the AWLM. "Yes Ma'am. I am trying very hard... she just wants... well... everything..."

"You consider writing an essay to be... productive?" R'hin queries, with a slight tip of head. "I can think of many more things off hand that would benefit the Weyr. But then," a beat, and a slight smile that may or may not take some of the sting out of his words, "I believe in the importance of individuality and opinion in riders." Hands clasp behind his back, formal, eyes shifting from one weyrling to the other. "Weyrling dragons are curious and apt to get into everything. It's true of all of them. They grow out of it." A beat, then the concession, "Most do, in any case." Leiventh's still, now, a big bulk against the sand, eyes half lidded, statuesque.

"Well, she can't have everything," Kazara says, glaring back at Xiabeth, though it's hard trying to not laugh. "Where would she put it all? Rather, where would /you/ put it all? You can only fit so much into a chest, or a weyr," she points out. She eventually loses the staring competition and turns her head away, chuckling. "My, but she's insistent." In answer to R'hin, she replies, "Oh, I do mete out the usual disciplines to supplement essays, depending on what they've done. I like to improve their minds, as well as drill them in the things they need to know."

Kayara looks over at Kali and shakes her head, "Oh I wouldn't be so sure about that. Xiabeth may outgrow Zimarath. It's hard to tell. So how are you adjusting to all this? Is it just me that actually tastes what Zimarath's eating when she does? Does the same happen with you and Xiabeth?" She asks Kali, feeling a bit more confident with her friend around. She smiles in amusement at Xiabeth's antics. Zimarath seems to sense the uneasiness of her chosen and waddles over to stand at Kayara's feet, nudging her hand with her muzzle. Kayara automatically scratches Zimarath's eyeridges in a soothing manner.

Kali pauses to look at R'hin. She smiles at him. "I don't think she is going to outgrow this." she shrugs. The dragon gets a smug look when she wins the staring contest. "Will you stop that, you're going to get me in trouble, that's why." she says softly to her dragon and itches her eyebrow before realizing it's the dragon's brow that is itchy. She scratches for her and smiles. She looks at Kazara. "Yes. Yes she is." she admits. She shrugs at Kayara as Xiabeth shifts and waddles towards the other green pair. Xiabeth peers at each of them intently then turns back to the bronze dragon, looking between the green dragonling and the bronze dragon. Kali giggles.

"Mm," is R'hin's non-committal murmur to Kazara's answer, lips twisting briefly. "In any case, I should allow you to begin your training. I've things to attend to back at the 'Reaches." A tip of head is given to Kazara, and a smile to the two weyrlings. "I'll keep an eye out for the both of you. When you can between, you're more than welcome at High Reaches." The invitation offered with a spread of hands, before he begins pacing over towards where Leiventh's hunkered down.

Kazara nods back to R'hin before he turns to stride back to Leiventh. "Goodnight to you, Weyrleader," she says by way of farewell, then she turns back to the two weyrlings. "So, did you, and your dragons, sleep well last night?" she asks, parking herself on the sand for the time being. "Kraz woke me up several times each night for a while before he settled down."

R'hin pulls on his flying gear, buttoning up his jacket before climbing up onto Leiventh's neckridges. The bronze's weight shifts as he tenses to rise, wings spread, the faintest of rumbles - more heard than felt - giving farewell to Igen's newest dragons before he rises.

You clamber up onto Leiventh's back, the dragon's sparkling eyes watching closely. You leap into the air, spraying sand all over!
