Description
The combination of genetics and hours spent in the sun give Dal his warm, bronzed skin; genetics alone are responsible for his dark mop of slightly wavy hair, his dark eyes, those expressive eyebrows, and the bow of his mouth. He's built upon muscular lines - tall, with the potential to be imposing if only he wouldn't slouch so.
WYSK
N'dalis (Dal) hails from Fort Hold; he and his family work in the orchards.
He spent a couple of Turns at Fort Sea with his Harper wife. She died in Turn 30; Dal and his toddler son returned to Fort Hold soon after.
Dal was Searched by Reesa and Khiabeth on Day 16, Month 10, Turn 31, and left his son behind with his parents in order to accept the invitation.
On Day 18, Month 1, Turn 32, Dal Impressed Utterly Reasonable Logical and Green Suraieth.
On day 22, Month 3, Turn 32, the barracks collapsed, leaving Dal with a broken leg and Suraieth with a severely torn wing. Both eventually recovered.
After more than eight months flying for Malachite wing, post graduation, N'dalis and Suraieth transferred to Jasper wing. They also serve as Jr. Assistant Weyrlingmasters.
History
Cothold-bred, born and raised just outside of Fort Hold, Enedalis - called Dal by everyone, to the point where most people don't know it's not his full name - is the second of four children born to Tinnar and Ami. Their family has worked in Fort Hold's orchards for generations, one after another, and any one of them would laugh at the idea of aspiring to 'more'. What's 'more' than a good, solid job, the kind that leaves you tired but satisfied at the end of the day?
Dal had a relatively normal childhood: he tormented the harper and healer apprentices, and smirked about how much luckier he was than Astivan and his brothers (they'd never get any freedom, poor kids!). In the fall, he'd be recruited in to help with the harvest, and that was fine: he liked being up in the trees, liked being useful, too. Life was pretty simple; he liked it that way.
At fourteen, he concluded his harper classes (with mediocre results) and took to working more permanently in the orchards. His older sister married a boy from Fort Hold and moved to the Hold proper; his younger brother eagerly anticipated finishing his own studies, in a turn or two, and joining his brother.
Three turns later, Dal began courting Ellisa, a Harper with big blue eyes who made his heart turn over in his chest. It would be a long courtship: she was still Turns off walking the tables, and even then, she warned, she'd likely be posted somewhere. Would he follow her? Dal didn't know. Could he leave behind everything he knew? His family never left. His parents weren't even sure if they approved of the match. Ellisa was so different to the girls they knew.
But he loved her. He was twenty when she walked the tables, and was immediately given a posting to Fort Sea Hold. The idea of being apart from her, now that they really could be together, was heartbreaking to Dal. If she was going to Fort Sea, so was he! They married a seven later, and moved to the unknown.
There were no orchards for Dal to work at, at Fort Sea - just fish, and plenty of them. He didn't like working on the docks as much as he had liked the orchards, but he'd made his decision, and Dal knew better than to complain. Besides, he had Ellisa, who gave birth to his son, Jaymin, soon after his twenty-first Turnday.
Less than two turns later, it was all over. A second pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage that took Ellisa's life - she was gone in the space of hours. Dal went home - back to the orchards, back to his family, back to... a place that no longer felt quite so much like home. His mother was more than happy to have a grandson to dote upon, and Dal... he threw himself into his work, trying to ignore the antipathy he felt, deep inside.
Can you ever really go home again?
And if not, then... what next?
That question was, at least, answered for him: Reesa of Fort Weyr Searched him for Isyath and Vhaeryth's clutch, and despite a shoulder injury, he went on to Impress green Suraieth... which left him with further dilemmas. What about Jay? How was he going to be able to balance his dragon and his son - his old life, and his new one?
For the first few months, life was very much weighted towards Suraieth, especially after the collapse of the weyrling barracks which resulted in a broken leg for Dal, and a badly torn wing for Suraieth. As both recovered, however, N'dalis turned his attention towards the future: to bringing Jaymin to live with him, to building a life for all three of them.
