Furry Red Monster Egg
It's a bright, cheery egg colored all over with red. Darker shades of maroon swirl around and create an illusion that looks very similar to fluffy fur. There's a dark splash across the middle that curves up, giving the impression that this one might just be smiling. This is further aided by the lack of crimson coloration in two spots above which is punctuated by black spots in the middle of those, like big unblinking eyes. Right smack in the middle of all this a round spot that's not so much red as it is orange overall it just adds to the comical appearance of this particular egg.
Furry Red Monster Egg gives an enthusiastic jerk, sending grains of sand rolling away in all directions as the egg pitches a short distance. Cracks pucker around swatches of maroon, and as the egg comes to a reluctant stop, one blue hindfoot punches through the shell. All at once, electric blue wingsails flash as the clumsy dragonet tumbles free, rights himself, and sets unsteadily but eagerly out into the great big world.
Explorer Extraordinaire Blue Hatchling
A study in contrasts, this bantam blue is rich with vibrant hues and boasts a certain idiosyncratic charm despite an unwieldy physique. Washing up his compact form in jeweled tones, a lustrous indigo coats his robust shoulders, reaching down to the slope of his portly chest and from there upswept to mingle with the electrified azure wash of the underside of his wingsails. The narrowed, sharpened beak of his snout dips hard under glistening sapphire-tipped eyeridges, arching wide and leaving animated, alert and enormously round eyes to dominate the abruptly sharp features of his face. Poking up through bold lemon speckling across his forehead, twiglike headknobs jut out and back, leading into equally spindly neckridges in an ungainly series of pointed wedges down a thin, clumsily long neck. Positively quivering with a wired intensity, his muscle is taut under slick lapis hide, lending the suggestion of constant motion even when he is at rest. For all his stout little body, his wings seem impossibly stunted as though they could not even bear the weight of his plumped bulk; the droopy length of his pinions, however, hints at growth with maturity if only to match the gangling length of his hind legs, birdlike in their stilted movement. Jutting out from between slender haunches, his tail is thickset and stubby, as readily useful for balance as boisterous, potentially destructive, gestures.
Temperament
From the moment he breaks shell, your Nilanth is an exuberant companion, full of a particular zip and creativity rarely found in dragons. Nilanth has a vivid, overactive imagination he often uses to create thrilling, delightful fantasies, the like of which make even the tedium of daily chores an adventure. It won't be unusual for Nilanth to get carried away, especially if you indulge him in his games -- he'll gladly lead the two of you all around the barracks, out into the bowl, and all over the weyr in his intrepid expeditions, even if you're supposed to be working quietly on math, or sketching out formations. Ever bold and venturous, when confronted with the unfamiliar and unusual Nilanth laughs in the face of danger: « Ha! You and me, Genefra, we're brave explorers! The word "scared" isn't even in our vocabulary! » Yet while you might appreciate his enthusiasm, it will often put him at odds with his clutchbrothers: he may come across to them as simply too strange, and with his desire to play pretend and his appetite for adventure, his attempts to draw them into his fun and games can fall flat. He may have better luck with his sisters, Jheilinth especially, though Mohraith may take his goofy little brother under his wing.
Though Nilanth's intentions are always good -- he hasn't a spiteful bone in his round little body -- there is very little filter between his thoughts and his words, and he's forever rattling away without much attention given to tact or etiquette, and just as his thoughts quickly turn to action, Nilanth is prone to mischief and calamity. In his curiosity, he just can't seem to help himself from trying to jump on someone -- because they could be made of Thread! or plunging his head right into that big bucket of oil: everything's just such a great adventure! But should he get in trouble for such things, you'll find Nilanth deeply apologetic and ashamed of his transgressions: « I'm so sorry, Genefra. I didn't mean to forget I shouldn't make a mess. » Quickly enough, however, he forgets past misdemeanors, for his memory is as fleeting as his fancies even for a dragon and though he tries, really!, you may find yourself endlessly reminding him of the things he should and shouldn't do. Contrary to his outward attitude of independence and daring, a young Nilanth is very conscious of his occasional ineptness, and you, and only you, Genefra, will be his secret confidant and intimate to his insecurities, just as he'll seek to draw out and reassure your own doubts and uncertainties.
As the two of you mature together, Nilanth will ever be a fanciful and energetic lifemate, offering creative or downright silly solutions to everyday problems: « Oh, your klah's not warm enough? Come on out here and we'll flame it hot again! » He simply adores your childlike enthusiasm, going to great lengths to indulge and encourage all those silly things you do and providing his own fair share of whimsical delight. As he grows older, you may notice a habit of his that may have been overlooked in his youth: Nilanth cherishes trinkets and trifles, whether they be dented pots, wherry feathers, or tiny little screws, rather like his dam's habit of collecting sticks and pretty things. He might begin by simply carrying such treasures around in his mouth, forever searching for more such curio, « Oh, yes, Genefra! We mustn't be lazy! There are so many new and exciting things out here, and we don't have a minute to spare to find them! » He may begin to hoard these prizes in secret, but once you have a weyr of your own, Nilanth will implore you to allow him to display all his fantastic findings, whether in a cabinet or laid out neatly on his ledge. Rarely perturbed by anything, whether it be an obstacle in his path or difficulties learning a new drill, Nilanth finds fault in few and is always seeking and promoting the positive in everyone he meets and everything he does. Yet faced with unfairness towards himself, you, or those closest to him, Nilanth is easily upset and in those times you will find yourself once again his defender and partner against the reality of his perfect, idealized world as he might never quite lose all his happy naivete. Depending on the amount of guidance you offer him, he may or may not outgrow his tactless, fumbling conversation, and although certainly with maturity he will be less prone to potentially disastrous misfortune, he will ever view life with a certain zest and awe.
« Gosh, but aren't you the greenest green in the whole... big, um... weyr? » Courtship of females is a foreign sort of game to Nilanth, but he makes a valiant effort at playing it anyway. He's no philanderer, choosing to keep his affection primarily for you, but every so often a green will catch his attention and then, Genefra, watch out! Nilanth will never be the suavest or courtliest of paramours; instead, his technique is unpolished but made up of ever-genuine words and clumsy offerings of tokens of his admiration, whether it be a pretty stone from his collection or a mental crafting lovingly dreamed up just for her. Nilanth will always go out of his way to find something special for his special lady -- why, half the fun is in the finding! It's endearing, if nothing else, and a green receptive to his attentions will find him to be cuddly and winsome in his ways. In flight, he is less driven by passion and more by the sheer delight of it: it's a great, fun chase, a grand game of tag, rather than a serious matter. Here, his smaller size and swift agility serve him well, and Nilanth is prone to displays of midair shenanigans and capers. He may be no dainty green, able to twist the wind to his wishes, but he'll undoubtedly be able to fly circles around his hulking brown and bronze brothers, and may end up capturing the prize more often than you'd expect. Once he does catch, he's not quite sure what to do with her once the mating is over, and is more likely to bounce off to his next adventure than hang about for days, especially if she's all clingy. Ick!
Public Impression Message
Explorer Extraordinaire Blue romps through a sand pile, scattering grains in all directions, to nose at the remains of an egg now long hatched. Finding a piece of shell of particular interest, he paws and tugs at the shard, picking it up and tossing it into the air and bouncing along after. In his excitement, the young blue trips over his own unwieldy feet and is sent stumbling and staggering forward right into a knot of candidates. So diverted, his whirling gaze turns up to a young, auburn haired girl with cream skin and all of the sudden, Explorer Extraordinaire Blue finds himself an accomplice to all his grand adventures.
Private Impression Message
Phew. The sands are getting awfully hot underfoot. In fact, everything is intensifying around you: the twisting colours and shapes swimming across your vision, the rising clamour echoing around the cavern, the rough touch of your robe against your skin. And your vision, no matter how many times you might blink, shifts and blurs and intensifies, as though everything around you were coloured by pencil and bolded by dark lines, an artist's rendition of the scene. You're not sure when you first notice it, the flippant jostling and poking at the back of your mind by a force entirely curious -- flicking through your memories, prying at the edges of your very being. Entirely charmed by what is found deep within, a piping voice exclaims, delighted by this find, this treasure, « Genefra! » Suddenly, as he makes himself comfortable in the disarray of your thoughts, everything snaps neatly into place and you know Nilanth's name just as you know that he is yours, entirely yours, in all his enthusiastic moxie. « Genefra, hi! Oh, aren't you excited? Everything's just so /great/ out here! We've got to go exploring, and, and, see everything there is to see, together, you and me! Right? But before we do all that... my tummy's awfully rumbly. »
Mindvoice
Veritably bursting to share all the exhilarating little details of life, the universe, and everything with you, Nilanth is a non-stop chatterbox of colour and sound and bumpy, lumpy, shapes and tactile sensations. His mental images are grandly, frivolously idealized in neat bold strokes and brilliant hues, comically realistic for all their extravagance in his formation of people and places. These sendings are an exercise in delighted, artistically stylized likenesses, the kind often found in illustrations accompanying children's books. And just as any storyteller worth his salt, Nilanth has a different timbre and inflection for every occasion and every story, adjusting his voice to suit the adventure just as any proper narrator should. On those rare occasions when he slips out of character, the mindvoice with which you will learn to identify with him is the piping, winsome tones of a bright and cheery alto; in those even rarer moments when he slips.
Dragon Inspirations
Inspired by some of the greatest children of literature and films, your Nilanth draws from characters such as Peter Pan, Pippi Longstockings, and Ramona Quimby as well as the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes to create that endlessly enthusiastic, high-spirited (and awkward!) lifemate you requested. "Nila" in Sanskrit means blue, blue, blue as your happy Nilanth! The name is short, punchy, and rolls right off the tongue, and we think the extra N ties in nicely with your own name.
