Description

Eighteen-turn-old Hypatia stands about five foot six, but her slender build and bright slate-blue eyes make her seem slightly taller. Her dark brown hair falls in waves past her shoulders, gently curling to hint at the womanly curves she might, someday, lay claim to -- she is more angular than anything, at this stage. She's often found in some form of make-up, kohl lining her eyes to add to the illusion of older age. Her simple white blouse has its sleeves usually rolled up, and is tucked into equally straightforward black trousers.

WYSK

  • Born to a High Reaches Hold assistant headwoman and her artist husband, Hypatia is the only girl of four children. Her oldest brother died in the Comet Pass when she was three and she has little to no memory of him, but talks about him and his death in a matter-of-fact way some can find offputting.
  • Managed at 14 to get out from under the wing of her overprotective parents to apprentice at Healer Hall; posted to High Reaches Weyr two turns later.
  • Hypatia is very opinionated and generally has a sarcastic sense of humor that sometimes tips into the macabre and grisly. Despite this, she's actually a pretty good Healer for all that her interests lie much more in what's wrong with people than the people themselves. People are interesting as people, but as patients, it is the pathology that holds her curiosity.
  • Her primary hobby is knitting, and she is often seen during the colder seasons wearing a fuzzy hat with a tassel that goes all the way down to her knees.
  • Despite her nearly everpresent sarcasm, Hypatia is rather sociable and likes talking to just about anyone.

History

Born and raised at High Reaches Hold, Hypatia is her parents' fourth and last child. She was born only three turns before the start of the Comet Pass, and so her earliest memories are riddled with unexpected Thread and unexpected Threadfalls. Her oldest brother, twelve at the time, died as a result -- but Hypatia barely remembers him now and isn't influenced by it past the overprotectiveness it inspired in her parents. They shadowed her whenever they could, sheltered her past the point of reason. Unable to understand this as a result of grief and not a result of just being obnoxious, Hypatia still resents them.

At age fourteen, Hypatia finally got the chance to leave: she expressed an interest to the hold's posted Healer to become an apprentice. Healing had always interested her, though she'd never had the nerve to speak up about it before, fearing the reaction of her overly-clingy parents. Her living brother, two years her senior, still hadn't been allowed to do anything besides work under his parents.

Thankfully for her, somehow a journeyman at the hold managed to talk her parents, or at least her father, into something a little more reasonable, and Hypatia actually got the beginning steps to a career: she moved to the Healer Hall a month later.

Two turns passed, in which Hypatia became more and more competent, more and more thrilled with her career choice and more and more free from her family. This didn't stop her from /missing/ her family, of course, which was really a shock to her. When the opportunity to move to High Reaches Weyr's new Craft Complex arose shortly after her sixteenth turnday, Hypatia jumped at it with all the enthusiasm of a recently-hatched firelizard on a pile of raw meat.
