It had been a long overdue visit, and with weyrlinghood and everything else... things just hadn't worked out that way. Still as Edyis studied the empty space that had held the bottle of Bended Red intended for the Fortian Weyrwoman, she couldn't be sure of how she felt.

« They just say she's gone. They have been for several days. »

How was that even possible? Edyis wondered. Riders didn't just dissapear, and yet Lilah had. Edyis leaned against Akluseth's bulk, gathering her thoughts and emotions together. Maybe they just don't want to be reached, with all the pressure... If I were in her shoes, I'd disappear for a few days too. Maybe we should look for them, they probably popped off to a beach somewhere."

« Ed, they are gone. » As in, nowhere. « If they were anywhere on Pern, the Fort dragons would have found them, don't you think? »

She didn't know what to say to that. The memories came unbidden then, that first day she'd met the goldrider on an Istan beach on an errand. Her fingers tightened on Akluseth's straps as she waited for that tide of memory to subside. It didn't make any sense; it raised more questions than answers.

When the moment passed, she pulled herself up between Akluseth's neckridges. Finding reassurance in the warmth of the brown's hide. Questions without answers, questions that might never have answers. The facts were facts. They were gone.

« I will miss Eliyaveith. »

Me too.

And then it was up, and between to return to their own Weyr. Where these sorts of tragedies occurred with far too much frequency.

Life, at least, would go on. It always did.
