Dazzling Daredevil Egg
Dreamy? Drab? Dull! Darting dabs of deliciously deviant dandelion dance in dizzyingly devilish disco displays, dripping downward despite dark denim detours that divert their direction. Demonstrating a deficit of decorum, defiant dermis defines dramatic depth, dynamic detonations of dazzling detritus ditching defined designs, daring discombobulation, declaring danger deep down inside.
Dazzling Daredevil Egg has downright perfected the shimmy and shake that signals impending explosion of shards, but so far nothing. In fact, it has stilled, sitting with only the faintest of rocking movements. However, this moment is short-lived, perhaps merely a breather for its occupant to build up the energy to lash out of his gaudy-hued prison, talons striking to create asymmetric fissures along the denim corridors lining the dandelion shell. Unable to contain its active inhabitant any longer, Dazzling Daredevil Egg deposits the Monkey in the Middle Brown Hatchling into the thick of things.
Monkey-in-the-Middle Brown Hatchling
A bit gangly in his youth, this newly hatched young brown's substantial length foreshadows the force of nature he will become. Lean musculature is loose and mobile almost immediately, not for this curious-looking young fellow a hatchling's awkwardness. Bright interest reflects aquamarine in the multi-faceted wide set eyes that are surrounded by a heavily creamed klah mask, the hue especially pale next to the dark cap of loam that tucks around his headknobs, reappearing below as if the tip of his muzzle were likewise interred in the earthy shade. Trailing down his neckridges only to tunnel beneath and behind the sprawl of fanned out wings of luminous maple is a drab swathe of weather-beaten teak. But while said dull coloration dominates his underbelly, it is brought up short at the elbow and knee joints where the bright fawn hue of caramelized sugar coats downward, punctuated by ebon claws. Trailing behind, slender tail snakes out in a mellowed cider that darkens only at the very tip where the spade matches the near-black of talons. Though certainly not handsome in a traditional sense, the lively play of colors splaying out across hatchling hide is eye-catching, a unique if startling combination, as individual a treasure as the young brown on which they are displayed.
Temperament
Life with Jekzith will never be dull. At times, even once his gangly younger turns have long since past, you will feel like you're linked for life with the world's largest two year old. He's full of wonder, comment, and questions on everything. Remember how you were missing the relative privacy of having your own quarters at Tillek and even having some freedom to do as you wished at Fort before you were searched again? Well, such times will have to remain fond memories, for Jekzith is eager to muzzle his way into every aspect of your life, and the lives of everyone you know or even encounter. He's generally well-meaning, he just never wants to be left out of anything. All that time spent trapped in his shell, slowly coming to awareness of the outer world and needing to be free, why, he was missing out! And the more he learns, the more he feels the need to share. He isn't hoarding all his new found information, he's there as a resource for others, whether they want him to be or not. Although more often than not his tendency to plant himself in the middle of whatever is going on is overt, leading those around him to mistake him for puppy-ish and a little thick at times, Jekzith is not slow, sometimes startling you with sudden disclosures that let you know he was paying attention to something you thought he wasn't, or that he absorbed a subtlety of a situation unexpectedly. In fact, Jekzith seems to delight in being able to surprise those who underestimate him, even you on the rare occasions that occurs (mostly early on - you'll learn to be on your toes with this one). He can be quite shrewd about puzzling things out, only letting you know the thoughts upon which he's been meditating when he's arrived at a conclusion, thereby making his thoughts appear random when they really aren't tugged out of thin air.
As a weyrling dragon, Jekzith is really in his element. He'll be there with full attention at all lessons. Not for him the impatience of others when it comes to learning. However, he will present his own challenges to the WLM staff as you might expect. A lecture with him in attendance might take twice as long as he feels the need to pass comment on nearly everything, whether it be the topic at hand, < < You were talking about unexpected updrafts? I found one the other day by the star stones when we were on elevator duty. It is quite strong, but if you bank around the west end of the ledge, you can avoid it altogether, » or on other things that distract him, such as his classmates. < < Did you know that Bryth's rider Joie used to work in the laundry? She still does her own washing, and that's why she has that clean smell all the time, I bet she won't like how her clothes smell after we finish chewing all this 'stone! » However, despite his running commentary on his weyrlinghood, he does work hard to excel at his lessons, and he does a good job of it too. Though he doesn't bulk up the way some of his classmates do, his length and lean musculature allow him a substantial edge when it comes to aerial pursuits.
Graduating to the wings will be a source of great pride for Jekzith, and hopefully for you as well, as he rapidly fits into his fighting wing. Some of his bounding, step or speak first without looking ahead, will begin to mellow somewhat, perhaps tempered by your more laid back way of approaching life, though it will remain with him always. More now the thoughtful suggestions and spontaneous bright ideas, although he does retain an image to others of being a bit of a busybody, overly involved in others' affairs. This too, will stand him in good stead as his career in the fighting wings progresses. While you teach him to temper the thoughts he wishes to share, perhaps running them by you first, you will learn from him the strengths and weaknesses of those around you, for he seems to have an invaluable ability to size up the abilities of others, to see what patterns they fly best who they work best with, etc. And he's never unwilling to scrap the tried and true should a better plan occur to him. He's quite adaptable. Should you ever vie for a leadership position, particularly in the wings, having such a diligent observer and flexible partner on your side can be an incredible asset.
As you might guess from his desire to participate and nose in to everything, Jekzith will be an early and avid chaser of all things female, be they glowing greens or gleaming queens. Although the polished flirtations of others won't come naturally to him, his enthusiastic charm, innate honesty, and determination to put himself out there, not to mention his aerial expertise, may spell success. Should he be so lucky as to sire a clutch, Jekzith will prove a doting but not overly protective egg-watcher. He's fascinated by his progeny, so he can understand the masses being enthralled as well. And he'll likely drive his mate to distraction too, with his need to be involved in the whole process, building egg mounds, shifting eggs around, commenting on the eggs' appearances, etc.
All in all, life with Jekzith will be an adventure. He's well-meaning and smart, although sometimes you couldn't prove it by the results of his actions. Enjoy the challenge of making your lives together!
Public Impression Message
Monkey in the Middle Brown Hatchling pauses in front of a tall dark-haired young man. Not unusual, seeing as he's inspected nearly every person on the sands, candidate or no. He won't be missing out, leaving any shard of shell unturned. But without the slightest hint of reluctance, the young dragonet seems finally content to let the rest of the world slide by, his universal focus on the flurry of activity around him narrowing as he fathoms the depths of strangely stormy blue eyes, staring upwards with a joyous croon at the now former candidate.
Private Impression Message
Monkey in the Middle Brown Hatchling stops right before you, his most active search having at last come to an end, though clearly the thoughts whirling a million miles an hour behind that deep blue-violet gaze have continued, for now they are audible to you. An assault of enthusiasm pops into your mind unannounced. < < Did you notice how many people there are here, P'draig, and how many shards on the sands? It is amazing that I found you, but I was looking hard. You know, I knew right where you were the whole time. I bet you didn't know that, did you? But I wanted to make sure I took all of this in. Will it always be this exciting for us? » Just the scarcest hint of red edges the outer facets of his eyes as he is distracted by more pressing matters. < < There is the emptiest feeling inside my stomachs! Won't you help your Jekzith find something to fill it, please, my P'draig? Then we can get back to whatever else you want, please? » he pleads, staring up into your stormy blue eyes.
Mindvoice
Jekzith's mind is constantly with yours, a low hum of activity in the background that probably takes some getting used to at first, present even when he sleeps as he's an active dreamer. When he more consciously plants his mental touch in the form of words in your mind, it's quite expressive, wandering the scale frequently though usually settling in the tenor range, illuminating his thoughts like rays of sunshine making what was muddled in shadow more clear. However, he's equally at home with throwing images your way, and making use of the full color palette to demonstrate his moods.
Dragon Inspirations
With the eggs being themed upon the letters of the alphabet, we wanted something similar for the hatchlings, and came upon the idea of creating them based on symbols. Jekzith is based upon the ^ symbol, which is used to interject additional information or corrections into text. Tried to find you a better definition than that, but in the days of the computer, the easy stuff we learned back in elementary school is rather tough to track down on the internet, while the more esoteric is everywhere. I did find lots of information on the ^ symbol being used to report compiler errors in computer coding, though, and this is in keeping with the angle I took on it for Jekzith. The carrot (as that ^ is called) butts its way into the middle of things, but it usually has a sound reason for being there, even when under appreciated (as code errors and rewrites usually are).
For his physical description, I based Jekzith on the squirrel monkey. Couple of reasons for this. The idea came to me when I was trying to come up with hatchling names and I thought about how Jekzith is like the young child who wants to get the ball, interposing himself in the midst of others and jumping up and down trying to get it and the accompanying notice and attention, a la Monkey in the Middle. So I went online searching for monkey pictures, and came across the squirrel monkey that had some neat variations of the color brown, and really, Jekzith's kind of squirrelly at times, so voila! If you'd like a look at some of the pictures I looked at while doing my homework on squirrel monkeys, try the following links: www.primates.com/monkeys/cannabis.html
Name Meaning
Jekzith's name comes from the Basque word for interjection - interjekzio. A little unusual, but not hard to pronounce, overlong, or full of double vowels!
Clutches
Jekzith has produced 0 gold, 2 bronze, 4 brown, 5 blue, and 8 green dragons.
