Rafevan had sent his own letter on the heels of Irianke's: one filled with apology and, if he were being honest, passive aggression. Unfortunately, I am not in a position to strike down a dragon's opinion, he told them, if he should think this a better calling for me. He was very sorry about it, though, but as they had not seen fit to tie him better to their craft--.

And then he waited. Whatever their suspicions, no one could deny his promise as an apprentice. Rather than let him face the dragons' choosing, they would have to promote him, to preserve this most productive posting for him. Anything less would just be stupid. He knew, as well as Irianke did, that there was no chance of a dragon choosing him--and he did not want one to--but the Smiths, they had no idea. They'd cave, cave like those hallways down below--Rafe shut that thought down, and comforted himself with thoughts of his knot.

He kept aloof from the other candidates: no point bonding, no point making them think he was one of them. He wasn't. He was just waiting on the confirmation of such, though it was delayed beyond what he expected. Rafe performed his menial chores without complaint, ignored the other Smiths he saw in passing, friends and Master alike. And Rafevan bid his time until the letter arrived.

He was still waiting when the dragons started humming.
