Orbital Oddness Egg
Unremarkable in its shape or size, it's the illusion provided by the coloring that lends this egg its individuality. Speckles of sky blue intersperse with pinpricks of amber that swirl over a background of muted silver. Light catching the egg creates the idea of it being caught in the motion of slipping between one world and another - here and yet not quite.
Snap. Crackle. Pop. All feet present and accounted for, bright blue in shade, but the dragonet's body is still caught within, cracks and striating outward from where limbs came through. Finally a sweet-eyed blue face makes an appearance through the rounded tip of the Orbital Oddness Egg and the hatchling trundles onward, still egg-clad.
Between Earth and Sky Blue
From a cherubic nose to a broad, steadying tail, an unending shade of a deep, cloudless autumn sky stretches across the softly rounded contours of this blue. Chubby legs, out of proportion with the length of his frame, lead down to paws that darken about the edges from where silvered talons extend, while stubby wings extend to reveal cloud-swirled patterns in the veining of heavily opaque curtains. Lazily sloping neckridges rise along his back, past wide shoulders, up along a short neck streaked with iolite, to crest softly over his headknobs, like worn out stepping stones towards the heavens, polished to a fine grey-blue sheen. There, a sweet, rounded face with a blunt-ended muzzle and low-sunken eyeridges hanging over small eyes culminate the image of a leisurely afternoon, filled with unfocused dreaminess.
Temperament
Centered. Grounded. Playful. Daydreamer. Masoth bridges Earth and Air elements, ones that are usually diametrically opposed to find balance between them. He's very sure of himself in most ways, centered in who he is and who /you/ are and how the two of you go together. He's grounded in the sense that it's hard to knock him down and can be very practical and matter-of-fact about life, the universe, everything. This doesn't prevent him from having a sense of humor, a playful side that delights in enjoying the foibles of life, observing them with a sense of whimsy and tackling new things with innocent exuberance. He's also got a vivid imagination and can fill your head with amazing stories plucked out of thin air it might seem, though they're rooted in the things that the two of you experience together every day.
As a dragonet, Masoth's a happy bumbler for the most part. Hard to knock down, even in the face of endless mistakes. At first it's the physical things that will pose a challenge for him due to the discrepancies in his build. His legs are too short to make doing ground drills comfortable, he might even waddle at first when moving around the Bowl for something as simple as shifting from mealtime to bath time. Then it'll be his wings or his tail that aren't suited for lifting off the ground properly. He'll take all these things in stride though, certain that it's just a matter of working hard and sticking with it to get through. And he'll be right. As he grows, his physique will mature, limbs lengthening, coming more into proportion with the rest of his body and by the end of weyrlinghood, he'll be able to catch up on some of the things he lagged on before or even excel suddenly, where he struggled early on. Between will not be a problem though: he's good at viewing things with imagery and visualization will be a snap for him.
Once he's grown into his body, Masoth will be a fairly sturdy, solid presence though by no means hulking. In fact, balanced may become a good word for him, neither too long or too short, too stocky or too lean, happily falling into the median of size and shape. This comfort zone will be reflected mentally and emotionally as well. He blossoms as a visual creature as he matures, his imagination ranging far and wide to build lovely landscapes and visions for you, cobbled together out of the places you've gone, the people and other dragons you've met, all of it infused deeply with strong emotions and symbolic meanings. Over time you'll probably both learn to both interpret the offered symbols better in your case, or to present the ones that will make sense to you in his, forging an ever deeper and more satisfying bond. While he's not exactly pushy, Masoth's determination and matter-of-fact approach to many things may help to draw out hidden strengths in you, helping you to reach for things that you might have been too afraid or unaware of to dream about. « What? Of /course/ you're lovely and I'm sure R'der would /love/ to spend some time with you. Perhaps an invitation to tea? »
Mating behavior is an area where Masoth may be a little slow off the starting line as well. It's an area where he mirrors you, reticent about jumping into the pool until he's tested it out well with a couple of different toes. It's not that he's not comfortable with girls, just that he's got certain ideas about how catching a green should go and he's a bit of a romantic at heart, holding out for a chance to chase after /just/ the /right/ one instead of taking all comers. Nonetheless once he makes up his mind, he'll be a stalwart, steady lover, adept in the air, able to match many of the greens' most aerobatic moves in spite of a physique that doesn't seem particularly cut out for it. Sincere more than flowery, nevertheless, he's an ardent and dedicated suitor who courts rather then pursues, even if the language is sometimes lacking or conveyed by feeling, image or symbol rather than words. He has an innate inclination towards devotion and you may find him favoring a particular green over others as the focus of his attention over time, though this won't prevent him from chasing or being interested in others.
Swift, strong and efficient in the air, Masoth is the consummate professional fighting dragon when tapped into the wings and rising to fight Thread. He understands that this is what dragons were born to do and he does it with dogged tenacity and brisk efficiency. There's little in the way of passion or anger about Thread in him, but he knows his job and does it well: get up, get it done, get back down and cleaned up so you and he can get on with other things that interesting to you both. He's large enough that he could make it through a whole Fall if you and he pace things properly, but he's also able to change up and keep up with the acrobacy of greens who need to drop out halfway through.
Public Impression Message
Clumsy bumbling around on the sands is concluded with a bad fall, a trip over a piece of abandoned shell that has the Between Earth and Sky Blue nose-planting in a hillock of sand. Nevertheless, he picks himself back up again, sneezes the sand from his nostrils and presses on doggedly towards a willowy young women with sea-green eyes and sandy hair.
Private Impression Message
A light dancing breeze seems to pick up around and banish the heat of the sands, washing you with cool relief. Airy clouds slip into your mind and the scent of fresh springy earth tickles at your nostrils along with the feeling of mud squishing between your toes. A chuckle, like wind stirring the leaves of a great tree grazes by your ears, or does it? No, you're not really so much hearing this as sensing it, thought to thought with Masoth. Oh of course, with Masoth, who is here to stay with you forever and ever, so help him Faranth. « Niena! We have so /much/ to do together! Won't you take me where we can take care of the big hole in my middle and the itchy-itch so we can get started? »
Mindvoice
All of the facets of the wind are embraced in Masoth's voice, often felt as a stirring of breeze in your mind, pushing clouds into thoughts and shapes that have some meaning to him. Sometimes it's crystal clear to you, sometimes it might take a little work to get at what he's saying to you. It's not that he can't use words, just that sometimes he seems to prefer this symbolic method of conveying things to get a deeper meaning behind mere speech. When he does actually voice things, he is often exuberant, a certain earthy comfort in the richness of his tone, a hollow basso profundo that echoes from under the ground only to burst forth into the freedom of the air.
Itchyspots
All around his talons and just under the join of wings and body will be where Masoth needs lots of oil and frequent scratching. He can for the most part get to these himself for immediate relief, but he'll delight in the kind of special attention that only you can give him, especially with maintaining his talons.
Dragon Inspirations
Maya/Snow White from Mercedes Lackey's "The Serpent's Shadow"/Sylphs from the Elemental series as a whole.
The Maya character is half British, half high-caste Brahmin and also combines scientific medical knowledge with skills as an Earth mage. She is smart, grounded and methodical, but also has a dry, wry sense of humor and light charm. She also straddles two different worlds: Imperial Britain and the India of that time period. Masoth's dual nature is inspired by this duality in Maya. His grounded and centered qualities are also inspired by Maya herself as a confident, professional medical practitioner. His playful and imaginative side is inspired by the 7 avatar 'pets' that Maya brought with her from India, some of whom are very light-hearted creatures, especially the mongoose pair and the Hanuman langur monkey. Furthermore, this side is enhanced by drawing in characteristics from sylphs which are air elemental spirits also covered in Lackey's Elemental Mage series of books.
Egg Inspiration: The ability of a whitelighter to 'orb' from one place to another at will as represented in the TV series Charmed.
