"Ikky?"

It was a chilling thing to hear nothing but one's own noises, pure silence seeming to abruptly end every step, every voice. That was what Bones was met with at entering the familiar ground weyr: a cold unwelcoming silence. There were no guards. There was nothing left to guard.

"Ain't you a little old for hide and seek?"

It was neither denial nor stupidity that led him to talk to the nothingness, though insanity seemed an option judging by the smile still at his lips as he walked out into the middle of the abandoned space, door left open behind him.

"Alright fine, you ain't gonna come out then? Y'can just stay where you are and listen."

Bones reached into his back pocket and tugged free a strip of leather with metal buckle attached. It was a wrist cuff, one very much like his own. He clutched it in one hand and looked down at it in his palm, stroking over the top of it with his thumb to feel at the silver buckle.

"I figured I'd stop by for another visit. We had fun last time right?"

The pause after his question was bleak and silent, a gust of hollow wind in the hallway behind him putting an exclamation point on the desolation. For nearly a full minute, the big man just looked down at the cuff, smile a constant fixture on his face.

"... yeah, we did. We did. I got this for you on account'a how much alike we are. Y'know, both bein' killers an all?"

The smile couldn't hold any longer, slipping from his face as he took a final few moments to examine the gift he had intended to present to the missing rider. The leather scrap fell from his clutch, tumbling end over end until it landed with a small sound to the stone floor below. There was no reason to hold onto it anymore.

"Do you see what an ass you made outta, me kid? Leaving me just standing here talking to myself? I didn't even know you that well."

Sliding his fingers into his pockets, he looked up from the floor to the ceiling, then around every edge of the room. It was the last cursory examination of the place he'd ever give, and he savored it for all that it was worth. Prolonging things for no longer, he turned to leave with a meandering shuffle, smile slowly returning as he hung his head, surveying the stone waiting for him under each step.

"You probably wouldn't have liked it anyway."
