The evening after that run-in in the infirmary, another candidate delivers a letter to Daegan from his "girlfriend" (he sniggers a lot as he does it). It's short, and the handwriting and spelling mistakes are comparable to those in that last letter.

Daegan -

I tried to find you, but couldn't. I was hoping we could talk, but as I am about to go home, that won't get to happen. Maybe you could write? I'd like that.

You don't have to be shy about liking me. I won't laugh.

I will try and come for the hatching.

Arriving almost a sevenday after Madilla's second letter, a correspondence arrives via Telgari rider (along with a number of other things for the Hall, but one is addressed to Madilla, herself!). The penmanship is neat and decidedly boy-ish - lacking the flourishes of many of the fairer sex's hand.

Dear Madilla,

Your handwriting is atrocious. Practice more. No one will ever be able to read your healing reports as is.

My friends seem to think its a good idea to be kissing you. So. I suppose we could do some more of that when I'm back at the Hall. They say the hatching won't be too long now that the eggs are hard enough for the candidates to touch them. But, you have to drop this liking you stuff. Kissing is just kissing. (A line is scribbled out here that once probably read: Kissing does not make us- before the decision to scribble was made.) If you like my kisses, you can have more. But you are very young. How old are you?
