She saw a ghost tonight. There in Snowasis while the world spun on with its endless buzzing drone of activity, her world slowed to recognize the ghost. A younger girl, a more carefree girl. As Tayte walked across the dim expanse of bowl, sweater tucked tightly around her, she reflected.

When had the girl died? Was it when Yvalia was born? When Cherie had left her on her own? When she discovered she was with child? When the child was conceived? Did she die that night in giving life to another? No. She knew as her thoughts drifted, it was the night with the healer. When the healer offered her that hateful draft after insinuating that a child born of her should not be.

She felt the anger rising in her, summoning hot tears that still spill just as readily so many turns later. Her pace quickened. Now she couldn't wait to be with her Vali. Who was that girl in the bar trading flirtations and evasions with that rider? Did she even know her anymore? No. That was a ghost. Her life was different now. No room for the Tayte that was. The Tayte of so much trouble.

She couldn't wait until Libby was on her way, with Tayte's thanks to the apprentice for keeping an eye on the sleeping Yvalia. Once alone, she moved to the crib, sliding to the floor, pressing her cheek to the bars and watching the gentle rise and fall of the toddler's chest. She'd wiped the tears for her entrance to her room, but now let them flow. Here was perfection. She had to be better to be deserving of it. None of this silly, childish throw-back to the days of old. She came here for a fresh start, not a do-it-over-again. She wouldn't be drawn into temptation again.

Even as she made the promise, she knew she would break it. She had never been good with temptation. But whatever she did end up doing, she would not prove that bitch of a healer right.
