| The bruises were starting to fade, now, turning from purple to yellow. His jaw still hurt. But it wasn't the physical pain that bothered him so much. Most of his things were still in the barracks, but he hasn't been there in days. Turns out, some girls felt sorry for you when you got the shit beaten out of you. Cassie, her name was, one of the lower caverns girls. The way he remembered it, she got him drunk and took advantage of him. But he let her. He remembered, when they first arrived, telling the other exiles to stay away from alcohol. He worried that it made them different, affected their behavior, their judgement. But now he understood why people drank. It dulled the pain. And not just the physical, the emotional pain, too. So he drank. He didn't feel a whole lot better, but it hurt, a little less. |
