AKA: How to Set Up your HRW Character Page in 11 Easy Steps
Contents
Create the Page
From the wiki top bar, hover over the 'Add New' button to get the drop-down menu. Select 'Character Page'. Click the field that says 'Character name here'; replace the text with the name of your character on the game. This should be the actual name of the character object. Click 'Start a new character page' to begin!
Start Filling in Details
At the top of the new page, you'll see 'Creating NAMEHERE'. Below this is a white text box, which is where you'll enter all of your information. If you're currently asking yourself why there are already things written there, that's because the wiki uses some awesome templates to make sure everyone's got the same basic information - and it makes everything far easier for the wiki code inept among us!
The first text you'll see is this:

These are all common fields that are applicable to practically every character. If something doesn't apply to your character, or you would prefer not to fill it in at this time, simply leave the field blank.
Here's how to fill them out:
Picture
First, you'll need to choose a picture that will represent your character. Most of the time this is a celebrity 'played by' - someone who closely resembles the physical desc of your character. You can take a look at The Faces of HRW page to see who's claimed what face. Picking a face isn't essential! You can choose to skip this step, if you prefer.
For full steps on adding a picture to this field, click here (to be linked to step 9).
Position
This is your character's position, or occupation. For example, this could be Resident, Bluerider, Journeyman Harper, Weyrwoman - whatever your character's IC designation is.
Craft
If your character if affiliated with a craft (such as Smith, Beastcraft, Baker and so on), fill this in here. If your character is not a crafter, leave it blank.
Birthplace
Wherever your character was born.
Mother, Father, Siblings, Children
The names of your character's mother, father, any siblings or children they may have. Some people choose to include the gender and relative age of the siblings and children, to keep track.
Friends
(These show up as 'Other Ties' when page is complete)
These are any connections your character may have. This tends to be filled in with PC characters, or NPCs that are important in your character's life.
Played by
If you've chosen a celebrity face to represent your character, put their name here.
LiveJournal
Some players choose to share their character's RP logs via LiveJournal. If you would like to include a link to your LJ account, you can use the following code in this field:
Name you want to appear here
- Replace 'ljnamehere' with your LJ username.
- Replace 'Name you want to appear here' with how you'd like the link to appear.
When you're finished, you'll have something that looks like this:

Description
This is probably the easiest field - simply copy and paste whatever character description you've used on the game! And voila. Done!
Please note: if you have used tabs in your desc (%r on game), you will need to remove them on the wiki, as it does not like them.
WYSK
WYSK stands for 'What You Should Know'. Type '+help wysk' on the game to find out more.
In this field, you can copy and paste the WYSK you will have had to set before leaving chargen. To add coded bulletpoints, you can start each new line with an asterisk.
History
Every character has a history, right? This section is your chance to go wild - or to keep it simple, as you wish. Try to cover the basics of their life; where they're from, what they did in their younger years, how they are where they are now.
Relationships
This field will grow as your character gets more scene-time with other characters. One of the neatest ways to organise this section is by using a bulleted list, which is as simple as starting each new line with an asterisk. Many people choose to link names used here to that character's own wiki page.
For example:
* Random NPC: I like/loathe/detest/despise/adore/worship him.
This will give you a bulletpoint (*), bold text () and a link to the character's page ([[]]), following by whatever the relationship may be. Simply replace 'Random NPC' with the name of whoever you want.
Nearly there!
Beneath the Relationships field, you'll see this:
RP Logs
Icons
HRW

These are all template fields, which do not need to be adjusted. They have an effect on the way the page is laid out, where it's sorted into master lists, and, in the case of the RP Logs, it lists all logs that are posted that either include or mention your character.
You may want to add additional category tags to the bottom. For example:

Save!
Well done, you're nearly finished! Once you've got all of the above in place, you may like to click 'Preview'. This will give you an idea of what the page looks like, completed, so that you can make any corrections you might need to. Once you're happy, it's time to click 'Save'.
It's advisable to copy the work you've just done before saving; you never know when the internet may eat your work.
Once you've saved your profile page, you will be automatically redirected to it. If you want to go back and change anything, use the 'Edit' button located at the top of the page at any time.
Adding a profile picture
- Once you've chosen what picture will represent your character, save it on your computer as an image file (.jpg, .gif, .png and .jpeg are accepted).
- Open your character page. Scroll down to the bottom; in the bottom-most bar, click 'Upload file'.
- Under 'Source File', click 'Choose file'. Select your profile picture file from wherever it's saved on your computer. Click 'Open'. You'll notice that your image appears both to the right of the 'Source File' section, and below, in the 'File Description' section.
- In the 'Destination filename:' field, rename your image (if necessary) to reflect what it is - eg, n'kyprofile1.jpg.
- Scroll down, click 'Upload File', and hey presto, you're done!
Now, to add it to your character page:
- Open your character page. Click 'Edit', located at the top.
- When the edit page appears, fill in the '|picture=' field with the name of the file you've just uploaded - eg, n'kyprofile1.jpg. It should look like '|picture=n'kyprofile1.jpg'.
- Scroll down, click 'Show Preview' to see that everything looks alright. If it's all hunky-dory, then scroll right to the bottom of the page and click 'Save page'.
And you're done!
Adding icons
- Icons are used to represent your character when posting logs. They aren't essential, but they can be a fun way of expressing your character's emotions in the scene.
- Generally, icons are 100x100 pixels. If you don't have a programme to resize them yourself, there are several options online, such as picresize.com.
- Save the file you want to be an icon on your computer as a .jpg, .gif, .png or .jpeg.
- In the 'Destination filename:' field, rename your image to 'Icon charactername iconname' - eg, 'Icon n'ky playful.jpg'. You must have the 'Icon' (capital I) part at the beginning of the file name in order for the wiki code to recognise it.
- Scroll down, click 'Upload File', and hey presto, you're done! Your icon will appear automatically on your character page, under the 'Icons' section. Add as many as you want, using these same steps.
Adding a 'face' image
- To have your character's 'face' show up on the The Faces of HRW page, upload an image in the format of Face-Name.jpg.
- Once you've uploaded it, click 'edit' at the top of the page and put in the name of your played by, then press save.
- Please note: face images must be JPG files to work.
