« Aikane. » Whuffle-nuzzle. « Ai-KANE. I'm hungry. And I -itch-. » It's the usual routine for the days-old green, her imperative, but warm summons to her sleeping human a savannah-mix of windswept grasses, heat and sunlight, and the smell of white fur.

Finally waking from the bottomless pit of sleep, the southern teen almost falls out of her cot, flailing arms and legs as she struggles to quiet the cry in the back of her throat. She was back home in the caravan, making new pottery to take the temporary place of the pieces that shattered. But no; not anymore. Now she is -here-, in this strange and lonely place inside a mountain's heart, in the awful -cold-, and with another person, being, inside the privacy of her own mind. Balking, flinching away from Lelith's much-too immediate presence within, Aikane seeks to quickly do her duty on the 'outside,' and assuage the dragonet's hunger and itching.

Some days later, there's no more semi-avoidance allowed by Lelith, the sure and direct mind that is the green's holding her best friend by the bootstraps of Aikane's thoughts, and benevolently introducing 'her human' to the -full-, grand presence that is her dragon. Never mind that the fear within the girl is more than palpable as she sits stiffly still while her eyes are turned inward....the regal 'little' green's nose lifted up to touch her lifemate's chin. « You will learn to accept me for who I am, my darling. I accept you for who you are....and who you will -become-. » All the sunny warmth and protective love nestled about her mind still cannot convince Aikane that she's not about to be swallowed her dragon's larger ego, and the girl's tears and flinching continue, likely to the dismay of the weyrlingmasters and her fellow weyrlings.

Not much more than a few days past the first week of Lelith's life, the first significant change comes.....and not from the green. « No. » With every waking moment full of Lelith, the girl finally puts her tattooed foot down, even while inwardly ducking. Already she's felt the storm, the hot growl of Lelith's upset and anger over various things, like hunger that lasts too long, irritating clutchmates, or whatever bothers the 'empress' at the moment. « I...I need, I -want- time for myself. » Aikane means to eike out a parcel of her own mind to herself again, and while she's still overly-awed by Lelith, there's something stubborn enough -- self-preserving enough -- in the teen to finally confront her one-and-only lioness of a green. Needless to say, it doesn't go very well. But, in the end, after much stomping and growling by dragon, and tears and scowling by girl, the pair come to an uneasy accord over 'alone time.'

If only she could be home, even with Lelith, right now. It would be a little easier. That thought suddenly blisters Aikane as she remembers the disappointment in her parents' expressions when the gold didn't choose her. They were rid of another mouth to feed, rid of the 'stormchild' that enough people in her caravan thought of as a bit of a bad luck charm.

Like many other nights in the barracks, once everyone else was slumbering, Aikane quietly cried herself to sleep. She was truly alone.
