H'kon waited until at least some of the novelty of the clutches on the sands had worn off, although he knew the galleries would never be entirely private, and that this was the more true for the sands, with four dragons frequenting them, though only three of any concern.

He went to Tillek in the morning, so that he could bring Naelli to see Arekoth's clutch at midmorning, when most of the would-be gawkers would at least be occupied by some chore. Both times they landed, his father had stared broodily at H'kon's lifemate. Both times, his mother had smiled warmly at them, and hugged H'kon himself tightly, and too long.

H'kon brought his sister up into the galleries. He kept her close, and stared almost defiantly at the other dragons (asleep, awake, it didn't matter) while Naelli had her fill of staring at the eggs. Her excitement was tangible, through her hand in his, and when she released that to gesture, through the shoulder around which H'kon secured his arm. Arekoth had landed on the edges of the sands, and wasn't touching her, but he could feel it too. He was loving it.

When she asked if she would ever be able to stand, H'kon told her, no. She was too old. It wasn't even patronising; it was the first answer to present itself to him. Her disappointment was short-lived. Naelli was prompt in declaring herself auntie to all those eggs.

"Why auntie?"
"Because you're my brother."
"And Arekoth?"
"He's just my brother with wings."

At night, well after he'd returned to the life and duties of the Weyr, had met with a wingleader, had oiled Arekoth, had pulled the covers over him in his weyr, and was lying alone, trying to sleep, H'kon found his mind wandering along that same path Naelli had laid out for him.

How far would that might someday go? Should he take the role, would Arekoth ever share as a winged weyrmate? A winged father? H'kon's last spark of consciousness heaved it away as unimportant and hypothetical.

By morning, it had left his mind entirely.

< Just goes to show, Naelli is smarter than her brother. <3 This was perfect.

He never claimed she wasn't.
