Devaki
Prologue
There was a time when he'd dreamed of bigger and better things. Of seeing new wonders on the islands, of bringing change to the inhabitants, finding buried treasure, or a nearby island with plentiful resources, of maybe, just maybe, bringing his people freedom and returning to their place in society. And claiming his place in the family - he had a strong case, a solid ancestry. He had always been careful to keep that, just as his father had, and his father, and his great grand-father, who had been exiled by Lord Beradin.
There were times where he dreamed of living a simple life, finding a wife, settling down. But he'd seen the charts. He'd done the ancestry again and again. He was Blooded and deserved to marry high and profitably for his family. Whichever way he traced the genealogy, it was clear: there were no good matches for him that weren't on the edge of being interbred. He often wondered if he should, anyway. To keep their Bloodline alive. But what if the child was born wrong? They had rustic at best knowledge of midwifery.
He could marry someone much older than him. Maybe. But there was risk in diluting the Blood, too.
The Blood mattered here.
He was their Guardian, the protector of their minds. It was easy to lose your sanity in this place, and he kept them sane. But he did wonder, sometimes, how to kept himself sane. His father had failed at that. And it was his duty as the eldest son to take up the reins.
Description
There is no modesty, no self-consciousness about this young man, only a sureness of self and purpose. He has a perpetually unkempt look about him, no doubt in great part due to dark blond hair that will never quite sit flat or in the one spot. His chin is just sky of being square; eyes are deep-set and a light blue, his skin refusing to darken despite long hours spent outdoors. He is a person of perpetual motion, rarely sitting still. His shorts have been stitched and restitched, and now are a dull-grey color; it's impossible to tell what color they were originally. He's fortunate enough to have a small beltknife hanging through one of the loops, and is normally shirtless and barefoot to boot.
Background
Devaki is the great-grandson of Dinami, the third son of then-Lord-Beradin's half brother Radiel and his wife Mimet. Dinami had been trained as a healer, and specialised in mindhealing. He had no wish to Hold, and no intent to rule; he simply supported his eldest brother Henret, and as a consequence, he and his entire family were exiled to the island.
While their knowledge of healing faded, they attempted to keep as much knowledge as possible within the family, particularly of mindhealing. Dinami's descendants have always played a strong role within the island, serving on the Council of Elders, and they keep a close watch on the lineages, often strongly advising potential matches to be broken for fear of the dwindling diversity in the bloodline.
Both Devaki's parents died during the Turns of the comet pass. Viremi, his grandfather, served on the Council, leaving the duty of protecting and maintaining the island's lineages to Devaki.
Since being rescued by the High Reaches Weyr riders, Devaki has made no secret of his intent to restore his family's lineage to its rightful place and, by extent, provide a place for all the exiles to belong on the mainland. To this end, he has recruited the Other, Raum, to assist him with his investigations and the more untidy aspects of such an endeavor.
On day 23, month 6 of Turn 26, Raum and Devaki went missing, shortly after the death of the former exile Seani.
His whereabouts are currently unknown.
