Rodric woke from a restless sleep sometime before dawn and went out to stand on the tongue of his wagon, head cocked for Cedri's cries. There was no baby's wail rending the still hour before the sun rose, only the occasional creak of a board, the rustle of the wind in the trees, the crack of a branch out there in the woods to break the silence.

The harper lifted his head to the northeast where Reaches' cone stood, a slightly darker shadow high above, barely discernible against a sky only just touched with the first paler shade of gray-blue. He thought he saw movement for a moment, but it was gone almost as soon as he trained his eyes on that fleeting ghost.

It wasn't the dragons in the Weyr he heard keening, it was the watchdragons, one after another, opening their throats in a relay down the peaks from hold to hold and his hand gripped the door frame tightly. A couple of his people stuck their heads out of wagons or tents, looked up and around in puzzlement. The harper cleared his throat of the lump that sat there and pitched his voice to carry. "Reaches' Weyrwoman is no more." A simple, bald-faced statement that conveyed none of the choking grief he felt. A few turned puzzled eyes towards him, squinting through the darkness, but soon enough quiet reigned again. Quiet and candle light as each wagon in the small circle lit a candle in the window against the passing of Satiet and Teonath.

Rodric stepped back inside and packed a small bag, slung it over his shoulder and slipped into Serina's wagon to leave behind a note. He left another with Cedric, putting his brother's son in charge of his wagon while he was gone.

As silently as the world all around him, the harper slipped away, firelizards wheeling over his head, along old well-known roads, first to the nearest hold with a dragon on watch for a quick ride up to the Weyr, then out to Sea's Peak where another long lost love awaited.
